Taking children to Rush!?

Hello All,

Who all here have taken their kids to see Rush? What ages are your kids? How was it?

I'm planning on taking my 12 yr old boy and to the show here in Dallas in a couple weeks; can't wait to share the experience!!!

Originally planned on a friend coming in from out of state w/ his son to join but that fell thru; debating using the other two tickets for my wife and 9 yr old daughter or a freind of my son and his dad.

CA shows so far:

- Generally started on time?

- Total length of time for show?

(Dallas show is a school night and curious what I'm looking at).

Best,

Steve

I was 8 or 9 when my Dad took me to R30 in Dallas.. (17 now)

I too am going to the Dallas show! You can prolly expect a 3 hour show that will end somewhere around 10:30-10:45..

R30 was on a summer night so there was no issues as to whether or not I needed to get to bed.

You'll see alot of kids at the show, all ages and genders.

I've taken one of my 15 year old boys to 4 shows now. His first was in Pittsburgh two years ago at age 13. I hope to take him to many more!

We were surrounded by younger children and teens in Columbus. They were all blown away by the looks on their faces and seemed to have a blast. I think it's a great idea.

Both Cleveland & Columbus shows started around 7:40 and ended right around 11. A few minutes before in Columbus.

Just be prepared to explain why the person next to you is smoking a "funny cigarette" and what that "weird smell" is.

Funny, I took my younger brother to Rush many years ago when he was 17 and I just 'might' be 'somewhat' responsible but pretty sure he didn't 'inhale'....

Those days are long gone....

Dallas is an indoor show at the AA center that does not allow smoking at all. We've already been having the stay away talk with our kids but how much toking occurs anymore in an indoor arena?

Took my 17 year to Newark with the thinking he'd be one of the youngest there. Man was I way wrong. There were plent of younger kids there like 9, 10. From the ones I saw, they seem to be having a great time. In the parking garage after, I saw one dad with his about 9 year old. They had matching t-shirts. Naturally, the t-shirt on the little tike looked like a dress as it hung down to his knees. LOL.

I think it can be a great lesson to use to teach your kids how to behave in public. How to act when among a large crowd in somewhat tight spaces. What's appropriate at a concert, what isn't. Look - some day they are going to go to a concert. At least, they might take a few lessons of experience with them the first time they go solo...

I took my 12 yod to the Chicago show. You should have seen her face when they opened the set with one of her favorite songs. We both really enjoy the new album. She is still talking about the concert. Oh, and I deliberately selected aisle seats so she was seated on the aisle to minimize anyone handing her anything . . . just being a paranoid parent. :-)

Taking our 12 yr old boy for sure - showed him the tickets tonight, he's stoked; still up in the air regarding our 9 yr old girl - leaning towards taking her. If she goes it will be a family afair w/ my wife also; if not it will be a boys night out w/ a friend of our son and his dad.

Our daughter really enjoys music; mostly the typical young girl stuff but does enjoy classic rock - not like she has much of a choice at times...

I know it's not quite the same environment but we have taken them to the Transiberian Orchestra a few times; funny, our daughter actual fell asleep during the show the first time; she was prob about 4 or 5 though. Yes, we will have ear protection for the kids.

Both shows I went to started before 7:44pm and lasted exactly 3 hours. I saw a lot of kids in Charlotte, but not as many in Atlanta. I think it's a great idea to take kids so that they know what real music sounds like. They'll understand why people, like me, won't pay to see a whole lot of other groups, and why90% of today's music is junk. Clockwork Angels is a treatise by Rush on how to create Rock and Roll. It's a shame so many other bands get paid for selling garbage.

Anyways, it sounds like a good idea to take the kids.

Had a kid that appeared to be about twelve years old in front of me in Cleveland. Him and his dad wore matching komonos. The kid was also sporting a fake handlebar mustache. After a few songs, a roadie walked up front and handed him Neil's drumsticks. Between one song, Alex walked in front of him, chuckled, and said 'nice stache'. The whole show, the kid held both arms in the air, with his hands giving the 'rock n roll', or 'devil's horns' sign. The kid seemed to be having a ball.

I didn't see, nor smell any latin lettuce, but we were second row, so I have no idea what was going on behind me.

I totally agree about it being a great lesson to the kids. We took our 10 and 9 year olds to the Pittsburgh show. My daughter, 10, is a by-the-book kind of girl. She was not amused with some of the language she heard at times (the folks behind us stopped swearing once we settled in our seats, and I appreciated that) and was very upset that guys in front of us were smoking cigarettes. Life lessons.

They enjoyed the concert very much as they love the band. We got there hours early and that was the challenge of the day...keeping them from going nuts waiting.

As everyone else said...show always starts 15-20 minutes late and you'll be out of there by 11. It's a long night, especially if you have a considerable distance to travel...but it was well worth it.

I purchased musicians earplugs. They worked great! Sound was not muffled like foam or cotton in the ears...it eliminates the super high frequencies and allows all the other stuff to come through. Reduces by about 12 dB. None of us had ringing ears and we heard the concert really well. I paid about $10 a pair for them on Amazon.

If I had kids that were of the appropriate age (at least 10-12), then I'd definitely take them to the show. Of course, this would be contingient on them actually wanting to go. As much as I love the band, I wouldn't force it upon them: "You're going to Rush next week or you're grounded."

On the other hand I see families take that togetherness stuff a bit too far. While Rush is a band that is appropriate for all ages, not all bands are like that, and yet parents bring their kids to the show anyway. The week before, I went to see Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, and I saw a father bring his daughter, who couldn't have been more than 7 years old. That is the type of parent who needs to have child protective services look into the home life. At least wait until the kid is in his or her teens until exposing him/her to two bands who use sexual and violent imagery more often than Quentin Tarintino.

I definitely would have taken my 9-yr old daughter to the Atlanta show last night, all things being equal, but two factors prevented it. First, it was one of those 6-hours-down-there -> show -> 6-hours-back-the-next-day type of trips. Second, I paid a little over $100 for my seat, and my wife would have had an absolute fit if I'd bought a 2nd one. Not saying she's right or wrong, but that's just the reality of the situation. I would have loved for Katie to be there with me, but it just wasn't in the cards, unfortunately. And now, unless some really favorable circumstances materialize with respect to a 2013 US tour leg, I may never have a chance to take her. We'll see. I'll hope for the best. And who knows? Last night may very well have been MY last show. You never know...

Leaning more towards taking our 9 yr old. She enjoys music, have the tickets already, and if she get's too tired she's already proven she can fall asleep just about anywhere...

Funny thing last night; heading home after a football game with our kids and neighbor's kids, Tom Sawyer came on the radio and our boy started singing along right off the bat!!! Don't think his friend quite new the song.

My wife just looked at me and grinned
