80's Arcade Game Questions

Ok, this was part of my post in the pinned 80's aracade game thread, but my guess is once people have participated in that poll, they don't read it often, so I thought I'd start a new thread. I'm trying to think of the name of 3 video games (thought of a new one since my previous thread) that I used to play and thoroughly enjoy, but can't think of the name of - can anyone help?

1. - Had 6 levels I think that each were very different and each one like a different well known video game like Space Invaders and/or Galaga - it would say things when you died like "Bite the dust, space cadet."

2. - This one is probably tougher - there was a base in the middle of the screen that shot in all directions - up, down, left and right. Missles would get fired at you from top, bottom, left and right towards the base in the middle and you had to fire the missles before they got to you. The buttons consisted of 4 black buttons, one for each direction to shoot, and one BIG black button that you would use to fire. My brother and I would play the game where he'd fire continuously as fast as he could with the big button, and I'd use the 4 directional buttons to shoot - it was a blast!

3. - This one is unfortunately a little more vague, but hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction. What I remember about it is you're ship was at the bottom and you had to shoot at things (ships, bugs?) coming at you from above, kind of like in Galaga, except one of the weapons was a flamethrower that could extend very far up or down the screen.

If you could help UNstump me, I'd appreciate it!

Dude, I posted about the same game & never got a response either. As I was reading your post the name just came to me. This game was awesome & rather difficult.

Yes, that's it!

cool, thanks for that - i always loved this game because there were 6 levels that were all SO vastly different, almost like 6 games in 1, and you had to love that computerized voice that said things like "bite the dust, space captain!" one of my faves at the local arcade in the early 80's...

Anyone on either of the two other more obscuro ones I mentioned? These two were definitely less common than Gorf.

Also, anyone ever used to play Monaco GP? It was a simple car racing game with a foot pedal, but it was a particularly good one - the game itself was a much smaller unit than your average arcade game - smaller unit and smaller screen - SO much fun!

after the early 80's, games started getting progressively more and more violent to the point that i just lost interest completely in the newer games - i prefer it old school where a ship destroys a ship as opposed to an axe hacking off someones head with blood spilling out all over the place...

So anyone on either of the other two games I mentioned? I just remember that the one that had the flamethrower thing, had birds that flew, and it might have been called Phoenix? Ring a bell to anyone who was around in the 80's there wink.gif?

The only one I can remember that had birds was Joust.

I think the flamethrower one (#3) might have been Satan's Hollow.

Hmmm, this does have some of the elements I mentioned, but alas, that's not it after checkcing it out on the internet. This one had better graphics. Also, I looked up Phoenix, which I thought might be it and discovered an old game that I used to love, but the game I have in mind above is not Phoenix.

Thanks for trying though - anyone else???

on second thought and further internet searching, it is most likely satan's hollow. could it just be that the graphics are a LOT more primitive looking than i remember? has anyone hear had that happen, where they remember a game, find it on the internet or a picture of it, and it's much more primitive looking than you remember? it's really hard to know for sure if this is the game, but i think it is...

one more to go!!!

I never found out the answer to this one. Does ANYONE remember the name of the following video game? It wasn't that common, but I remember seeing at least 2 or 3 of them in various locations, so it wasn't hopelessly obscure either:

The graphics were very simple, but it got the point across. Anyone?

Dunno.

It almost sounds like "Starcastle," only in reverse - where YOU'RE in the center, firing in all directions, instead of the enemy. I know it's not the right answer, but still...

Man, I loved video games in the 80s. The "Golden Age" of video games, for sure. Space Invaders was the first of the really big ones (skipping "Pong," "Breakout" and the other various paddle games). Then Galaxian, then Asteroids, and eventually... Pac-Man.

Nothing like those older games, eh? Forget the newer and more violent ones with the "better" graphics; I'll take Tron and Phoenix and Star Trek and...

i'm with you there. once they started getting more and more violent, they lost me, and the better and better graphics didn't save it for me. if i ever play video games online, it's minesweeper, pac man, javanoid, galaga - simple 80's style games - those are still my faves. yes.gif

I'm definitely old school when it comes to video games. Tetris was the last game I fell in love with, and it was my most expensive game to learn, for sure. I never embraced the Mortal Kombat era, either. When that era began in earnest, I turned my attention to pinball.

I know this one Goob. It's called Space Zap. I used to play it all the time too. I played it the same way with a friend. She'd fire and I would use the directionals. If it's not Space Zap then I'm truly stumped.

Is the second one you're asking about called 'Missle Command'?

No, Missile Command is nothing like what I described, and that one was super popular so I'm well familiar with it. Thanks though! yes.gif

I'm normally not crazy about racing games, but somehow Monaco GP (with it's much smaller than usual cabinet) really did it for me. Ah, memories! eh.gif
