Dave Matthews Band - seriously, someone explain their appeal to me confused13.gif

Nirvana - Get too much credit for ushering the new musical sound in the early 90s. People seem to forget that Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains were right there with them making a huge impact on the modern hard rock scene. And oh yeah, all three of those bands material crushes Nirvana's stuff.

I'm know there's more but those two have topped my list for many years now.

I'd add Smashing Pumpkins along with those "better than Nirvana" bands. Nevermind is just decent no more or less. In Utero is way better for it's raw sound.

Besides, The Pixies did what Nirvana did before and were better at it.

Nirvana did not do the same thing as the Pixies. The Pixies are so far from grunge, I don't see how you could put those two bands in the same class?

You are right about one thing though. The Pixies are superior to Nirvana in so many different facets. I love the Pixies. 1022.gif

I got board with Nirvana in no time. sad.gif

I'd say all those grunge bands are overrated. Yeah, I enjoy Pearl Jam, and Nirvana from time to time, but it get's old fast.

All those 90's grunge bands sound the same to me.

Check out The Screaming Trees. I think they were the best of the grunge bands. Sweet Oblivion is a really good CD.

and those are the facts jack.............

And add no Led Zeppelin II, no metal. But Sabbath are the Godfathers and basically invented an entire genre' depite what a few misinformed folks think/say.

I saw an interview with Rob Zombie one time he said that "basically, everyone in metal is just doing Sabbath. Some of us speed it up, some of us slow it down but it's all really Sabbath. We're just lucky Tony, Geezer, Ozzy and Bill don't sue us all for plagerism."

I don't subscribe to the Zep is Metal thing. To me, they were a Blues Rock band with some Hard Rock overtones.

Is there something wrong with posting those bands? Where I live, I can name maybe four people, other than me, who know who DCFC and BFS are. Whereas, I can name at least 20 people who essentially worship sabbath.

No arguing Sabbath is influential, but they are by no means the godlike band people treat them as. Also, Ozzy bugs the hell out of me.

No, there's nothing wrong with posting bands who have gold and platinum records in the underrated thread which completely defeats the reason for that thread. It's there to draw attention to bands that haven't had mainstream success.

As for the "who created metal" thing, it doesn't exist without Sabbath. They are the originators of the heavy sound and the dark image associated with it. Priest and a few years later, Maiden were the next evolution of the sound as Priest were the ones to add the metallic sound to the heavy one Sabbath created. Priest could not have created what would become the standard metal sound without Sabbath coming before them and Rob Halford will be the first to tell you that.

I'm just going to step in here and make a quick point. So far, in the argument against Archangel, I have only seen statements that support the major influence of Sabbath.

But since when does influence = general awesomeness for everyone?

The thing that always happens in these threads is that someone posts a 'classic' and influential band. Then everyone blasts them for insulting the mighty whatever because 'without them we wouldn't have X" or something to that effect.

A band is overrated when they are famous, but their music isn't that good. Overrated has nothing to do with influence, ability, etc.

As far as bands go, Sex Pistols are quite overrated for me musically. Clash and Ramones were way better.

The Sex Pistols get notoriety not because of their talent but because of their rebellious attitude. The Ramones and the Clash were almost docile compared to the Sex Pistols.

John Lydon's (AKA Johnny Rotten) band Public Image Limited is much better musically than the Sex Pistols.

Here's my take. Using "good" to determine if a band is overrated has major flaws due to the subjectivity of the word "good". Judging a band by how many other bands they've influenced over the years or how a genre changed because of them is a much more solid measure of how they rate...in my book.

That's my take on overrated as well.

I think they get too much credit then they deserve (nowadays at least)

Sure, they were ahead of their time in the 70's.... But now, they're just another band.

When I said they were overrated, I meant it as a "their stuff isn't worthy of worship"

I don't ever remember saying they weren't influential.

It pains me to say this, but I think The Who are hyped up way too much. They had, IMO, 2 great albums, Whos Next and Quadrephenia...I think Tommy is overrated..good , but not great. I get their historical significance , but I just don't think their actual output justifies all the praise.

Don't forget about their impact and power at their peak as a live band. Also, a lot of their greatness lies in their early singles and they started at a time when singles were just as important as albums. Plus they 4 great albums by my count: Who's Next, Tommy, Live At Leeds and the 60s hits compilation Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy (I'm tempted to add Odds & Sods as well). Taking all this into consideration, yes they deserve it.

Wrong.

They INVENTED Heavy Metal as we know it. You would be hard pressed to find a metal band who doesn't give props to Sabbath.

While I definitely don't feel that Sabbath are overrated in any sense, I don't think they or any one band should get the credit for inventing a genre of music. Things just don't happen that way but evolve slowly, gradually over time. Even the darker occult subject matter and image wasn't completely unique to Sabbath at the time. If they were the first HM band though they're still the best (which doesn't reflect well on the genre as a whole).

Listen to the music that was out back in 1970, and then listen to what Black Sabbath was doing. They blazed a path that so many musicians have gone down. Very few bands have done as much as Black Sabbath has to shape where Rock & Roll is today.

I suppose next you're going to tell us that Elvis was overrated. biggrin.gif

This goes back to the point I raised in the previous overrated thread in that younger listeners don't make the effort to understand and appreciate what the music was like or indeed what the world was like back then and people's general attitudes, etc. Rock music itself had a history of only a scant 15 years or so when the first Sabbath album came out. People simply had never heard music quite like that before and it actually scared some people.

I'm done trying to make arguments. When Dylan, LZ, The Who, etc. show up on lists of the overrated, it's obvious that this is only a "here are bands I dislike" list.

Actually, it's a list of popular bands/artists I dislike and I therefore think are overrated. There are many underground/indie bands I don't like but don't think are overrated.

ALL RAP MUSIC!!!

I'm done trying to make arguments. When Dylan, LZ, The Who, etc. show up on lists of the overrated, it's obvious that this is only a "here are bands I dislike" list.

Have a nice day... 653.gif

Yeah...too many people don't understand the difference between thinking that a band if over rated and just not caring for a band's music.

The Ramones practically invented punk rock, and got little acclaim for it in the mainstream. They are one of the last bands to deserve to be on any list. It's almost as absurd to call them overrated ss it is to include Black Sabbath. wacko.gif

And the Stones? Please...what other band has stayed on top from the 1960s - 1990s. That's four freakin decades!

Well if you look carefully, you'll see I haven't really confused the two. As I said, there are some bands I like but still think are overrated. As far as the Ramones go, they may have invented or at least contributed greatly to punk rock but their music is still rather bland. I only think they're slightly overrated because of that point. And as for the Rolling Stones, they're extremely overrated because no band that makes such boring music deserves to be so popular. I really don't see them as having created anything unique or innovative like The Beatles or Black Sabbath.

The Clash were a superior band to the Ramones in every way, including the development of Punk..the Ramones were cartoonish.
