Everything off Presto. Sound sucks on studio album.

I agree with this. Presto had terrible production. Too thin.

Witch Hunt on ASOH. There is something about it, even with how "clean" it sounds, it has such an emotion in it. And with all the different live versions we have of it now, I still love Alex's improvised solo at the end of the ASOH version the most. It adds so much to it. I almost can't listen to the studio version because it doesn't have that solo in it.

But don't you think EVERYTHING from that time period sounded "thin"? Regardless of the artist?

I don't think it was until the "grunge" movement around 92 that rock music started to grow back a pair.

This would have to be A Passage to Bangkok from ESL for me. The best example of a live track trumping the studio original of almost any band I like...

A Passage to Bangkok rocks live. The ESL version is amazing.

Also, I'd say BRAVADO is another one that comes off better live than in studio, especially with that extended solo at the end. The DS version is probably my favourite overall.

Also, while I wouldn't say that I prefer the live version over studio, WITCH HUNT sounds awesome live. I love how much heavier the guitar parts sound when played live on the last few tours.

I've been seeing a lot of love for Bravado DS in here, but I have to say I think the Rio version is the best. The extended ending with the solo and jam are just amazing on that one, better than they're done on DS in my opinion, especially Alex's solo. It's just beautiful on Rio.

Most in this thread have also been mentioning Closer to the Heart on ASOH, but in terms of live versions I think the ending jam on DS is the best.

As for other live versions I prefer over the studio versions:

Distant Early Warning - Rio

Leave That Thing Alone - Cleveland

Resist - Rio (as others have said, I wouldn't dream of listening to the studio version, but this one is excellent)

Time Stand Still - Cleveland

Entre Nous- Snakes & Arrows live

Secret Touch- Snakes & Arrows live

A whole bunch off of SNA live, actually. That tour and album rocked hard!

Marathon- ASOH

Earthshine- R30

That sweet, epic version of The Trees followed by Xanadu, introduced by Broon's Bane on ESL. Holy shit, that's one of the best extended passages on any of their live albums. It really hasnt been topped.

Too many to name, really.
