Great movie!

Is this really good cause I am considering seeing it this weekend? I am famously very hard to please when it comes to movies.... Note: Saw American Hustle the other night and found it boring and average at best....

It depends on what you're looking for.

I didn't care for the plot of American Hustle but the acting was really great(IMO). I thought that Jennifer Lawrence stole the movie and Christian Bale was really good as well. I wasn't expecting too much but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

What makes Saving Mr. Banks great is the Disney legacy and the nostalgia that goes along with the movie Marry Poppins. If you loved Marry Poppins as a kid and love the legacy of Walt Disney, you will enjoy it. Tom Hanks does a good job playing Disney and the movie is successful at taking you back to the early sixties Disney empire and telling the story how a classic movie made it to the big screen. It's not a kid movie by any means.

One of my favorites. This one is good as well:

Yeah that's a classic. I'm looking to watch that one too, I've not seen it in a while

I find them similar (in plot and genre) and I love them both.

Speaking of older WW2 movies, I recently watched this one on Netflicks.

It's worth seeing if you haven't seen it.

Did you know that Steve McQueen did his own motorcycle stunts in that?

Something else about that movie, they recently found the tunnels.

I think Steve did a lot of his own stunts on most of his films. He and top stunt drivers Bud Edkins and Loren Janes did all the driving in the car chase for Bullitt. I think McQueen did the easy stuff and the close-ups and the other guys did all the fast dangerous stuff. I think it was Edkins who actually did that jump over the barbed wire fence in The Great Escape.

That looks a good article btw!

Howls Moving Castle. I absolutely love Hayao Miyazaki movies.

Howl's Moving Castle

Laputa

Nausicaa

Spirited Away

Ponyo

Kiki's Delivery Service

Porco Rosso

My Neighbour Totoro

Princess Mononoke

Panda Go Panda

all amongst my favourite films EVER!

Have you tried other Studio Ghibli films, such as Only Yesterday, Grave Of The Fireflies or Pom Poko? All classics...

and there is an absolutely stunning japanese war film called Barefoot Gen. It is an anime about the bombing of Hiroshima. It is devastating and the also the equal of western films such as Schindlers List and the like...

oh yes, I love the top notch anime aout there...

Absolutely! I've seen them all. His films are all really beautiful. I love how they interweave his love of nature into all of the movies. I can't say I have a favorite though I have to say there's a special place in my heart for My Neighbor Totoro. What a sweet and awesome film.

I don't have a single favourite, but I think Laputa is one of my favourite films of any genre. I just love it, it brings out the child-like wonder in me I thought I had left behind years ago. He creates these dreamy worlds that feel so...organic and familiar, and yet utterly fantastical you know there is no way they could ever exist.

And is the greatest film composer of all time, bar none! I have a Studio Ghibli box set containing about 30 discs and one of them is a live orchestra concert conducted by him celebrating his music from Nausicca up to Ponyo, and everyone who has watched it has come away breathlessly enthusiastic! I have no idea if its available separately but it is astonishing.

I love Miyaziki and Studio Ghibli. You would do well to look further into anime, there are a few really intriguing film makew, including Miyaziki's partner in crime Isao Takahata,; who directed the masterful Grave Of The Gireflies, and the little seen gem Goshu (or Gauche) The Cellist. The only film by him I don't like to much is My Neighbours The Yamadas. I found it annoying, but it has its moments!

But Barefoot Gen is absolutely worthy of your attention. It is one of the best war films ever made, and I think its a shame the western world has yet to really embrace it for the masterpiece that it is!

I've been a fan of anime since I was a kid. My favorite programs were Prince Planet, Astro Boy, 8th Man, Ultraman and Speed Racer. :) I'm always renting new series from Netflix. Just finished watching the series Rurouni Kenshin and

Blood+. Both of which I really enjoyed. The concert CD sounds like it would be awesome.

Which brings up another old movie I recently watched on Netflicks.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid. It was cool back then but now it's just amazing that people raced those old crappy motorcycles. No wonder Evil Knievel crashed so many times; those guys were really risking their lives on those old machines with no suspension. I think Steve McQueen was a producer of this. He's in it quite a bit showing some of his dirtbike racing that he did.

I haven't seen that, looks interesting.

Apart from that one stunt I mentioned McQueen did do all his own stunts in The Great Escape like you said, and even played some of the German soldiers on bikes that were supposed to be chasing after him!

If you're looking for another war film a little like the Great Escape, there's this one from a few years earlier:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a5/Stalag_17.jpeg

I've never seen this one. I think someone once told me that this movie inspired the TV show Hogan's Heroes.

I think that's true but I'm not sure.

It's a cool film anyway, not as epic and adventure-filled as The Great Escape but still a good, solid WWII POW camp drama.

Man...I paid 50 cents to see that on first run. I was actually singing the theme song a couple of days ago!

That was awesome:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/bd/Chained-2012-horror-poster.jpg/450px-Chained-2012-horror-poster.jpg

I saw that, it's a solid thriller. I was shocked when it was revealed that his dad had been in on it all along.

At least Gina Philips kicked his ass in the end...well she sort of helped...
