Photos with my DSLR?

I was wondering if anybody knows if I'll be allowed to bring my DSLR camera into one of the shows this year. I'm going to the show in Chicago at the United Center on April 12, and I'd really love to bring my camera along. (If you didn't know, a DSLR is one of the bigger fancy ones that has detachable lenses.) I brought it to the rescheduled show last year at Charter One Pavilion in August; the security guys at the entrance had to check it out for a minute or so and then they let me in, and I got some great pictures (the pictures are online here if you want to see them)

If I won't be allowed to bring the camera in, how could I contact the band to request a photo pass or something like that?

Thanks for the help. I'm new to the forum; I don't know if I've even posted here yet.

Best thing is to call the venue. They have more problems with the bigger professional looking SLR types with detachable lenses...They have been a little more forgiving of the compact digital types as long as you are not trying to video the whole show with it. Each place has different rules. I had no problem in Tampa last year...I am hoping Greensboro is cool too...

I took over 200 photos and never was told to put my camera away at the Bank Atlantic last night. Just as long as you don't use a flash or take video they don't seem to care. I have never had an issue with cameras at any RUSH show.

Neither have I.... tongue.gif

The last show I went to (TM in Atlanta) had lots of people taking pictures and I didn't see anyone being hassled. I assume the reason for this is simply because every phone has a camera in it. They can't possibly confiscate your phone or force you to delete the pictures so I guess they just let it go. After all, we are paying customers and a business should not hassle their own customers.

I emailed the venue and they said that they would allow "small digital cameras", hopefully this will qualify. I think I'll try to sneak in my bigger lens

Detachable lens cameras are not considered "small digital". So, more than likely they'll make you check it at the gate. If you happen to sneak it passed, inside security will catch you with it. I mean, that would be the best scenario. You DON'T want John to see it 'cuz that's when things will get ugly, real fast, and you won't like the end result.

Why not just do the right thing? Respect the venue (and band) and don't sneak in a camera that you know you're not 'sposed to have.

Will John really get involved in a senario like that?

Personally, I wouldn't chance it. The security at Charter One compared to the United Center, the UC will most likely be a bit more uptight about things like that. confused13.gif Cameras are typically frowned upon, so I'd either call ahead or leave it at home. You don't want to risk losing that camera. Edited by doublereeder

I'd trust FOHLights on this. Besides, look at it from John's point of view. Photographing the band is his job.

Most venues do have a specific prohibition against "professional equipment", which they (correctly or not) define as having detachable lenses - plus some of those "bigger lenses" are quite large indeed and thus may irritate the shit out of the people sitting near you.

I doubt they'd confiscate the actual camera - I don't think they could legally do that, though I could be wrong. But I bet you'd lose your film and possibly get escorted out.

Most of the venues I've talked to have said they draw the line at cameras with detachable lenses. They have to draw the line somewhere, and that's an easily definable place.

I believe that technically it's the band's call though, so if you clear it with the venue before hand you could still get stuck when the band actually arrives.

I don't risk it. I bring my little point and shoot and leave my DSLR at home.

Your last sentence is interesting. So, if a business has rules then people don't have to follow them? Would you go into Walmart and start urinating on the floor since business shouldn't hassle paying customers? That's one of the problems with today's society. It is full of a bunch of a-holes that don't think the rules apply to them and they can do whatever they want. I'm proud to be an a-hole that follows the rules even if I don't like them.

at Sunrise, I clicked a few photos on my little Lumix - and an elderly security guard came up to me all serious - "Sir, I have to tell you that if I see you take one more picture, you will be escorted from the building." As he was telling me this, the people on either side of me were taking a pictures and I could spot about 50 cameras in our immediate vicinity. Poor old dude probably doesn't realize that everyone has cameras - in their cell phones! lol. Anyway, I watched out for him, but still snapped a few shots. The point is, they can be dicks if they choose.

laugh.gif oh that would make for a cool photo/video... 3D, haven't seen 3d stuff since I was a kid at Ontario Place, I know I know it's everywhere nowadays but I'm not running out and buying the latest stuff.

I got a bunch of great photos from last tour, most of the time I was in the middle of a pack, Sarnia (now that was a free for all), Syracuse, Toronto ACC and Molson. But Columbus and Allentown I was on the edge of the row, I didn't get many pics in Allentown cause of the bad angle but did for Columbus. Never got bugged for photos for any show. Mind you for Toronto Molson Amp, security there is redickulees for anything when your getting in, they made me throw out a disposable camera one time, was worried with my slim point and click this time, but buddy infront of me held out his ticket, wallet and crackberry, so I did the same thing but replace camera with the last one. No problems at all!

I use my trusty Canon SD780 in black for extra discreetness, I have it on manual mode, flash off, red eye off, display one click off. It just makes it more discreet to not disturb the band or others around staring at a screen the whole night and I'm not snapping pics thru the whole show, my goal last tour was to get a pyro shot for each show I went to and I succeeded.

Also I'm not wanting to profit of the photos at all, they are all free for view and I'm sure download too on my picasa site.

One last thing, it was interesting for Toronto ACC on the SnA tour, the venue had plastered everywhere "photos are fine but no video please". Saw some usher trying to get a lady about 8 people into a row 2 rows in front of me taking a vid with a cell phone to "please turn off the vid recorder" I think I got something like 700 shots on that show. laugh.gif
