Jon
Hmmm, they do look a bit different in the photographs, but they're not actually different. Geddy swapped his bridges for Badass ones, so unfortunately there wouldn't be a date clue there. The change Rickenbacker made in late '76 was to increase the body size. If you look at how far the necks go into the body, you can see the difference.

ProfGumby
Basses SX Geddy Lee Clone - Started with a black, stock SX Jazz bass, swapped out the original neck, the stock tuners for used Fender CIJ tuners and the stock bridge with a BadAss II, and the chrome knobs for the black plastic Fender Jazz knobs, so far. I plan to swap out the pickups and pots for Fender like used in the Geddy Jazz. I wanted to make my own Geddy Lee tribute bass. Currently strung with D'Addario Half Rounds SX Ash body Jazz Natural finish - Swapped out black pick guard for a white pick guard and swapped stock bridge for a BadAss II. I had a fret job done on this neck. Currently strung with DR Flat wounds. SX P Bass, Alder Body and Sonic Blue Finish - I swapped out the neck that came on the bass with a Jazz Bass neck, I also had a fret job on the new neck. Swapped out the stock bridge with a Gotoh 201. Currently strung with Rotosound 77 Flat wounds. S 101 5 String, Trans Red Finish - Bone Stock! Stock strings, probably D'Addario round wounds. Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bone stock except I swapped out the chrome knobs with the black plastic Fender Jazz Knobs. http://img248.imagevenue.com/loc432/th_18583_family_pic_71308_132_122_432lo.JPG Amp Peavey Max 112 - 35 watt combo. http://img106.imagevenue.com/loc213/th_18647_145543_122_213lo.jpg Now if I could only play worth a damn..... Jon
I recently branched into the world of 5 string bass with these two: Firstly, a Warwick Streamer Pro M 5: http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3092/frontonpa2.jpg and then, I couldn't help myself and decided to buy a 5 string Rickenbacker too: http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7067/4003s5jg1yu7.jpg

Jon
Well, on the Rickenbacker the string spacing is a bit tighter, but that hasn't been a problem (surprisingly). I guess the only other difference is just remembering that you have those extra lower notes at your disposal and making use of the string as more than just a thumbrest. I bought them for a particular project, so I was forced to use those notes anyway when I was learning the songs. I'm not sure that the project is going to happen now, but I've been asked to play 5 a few times in the past, so I'm glad that I now can.

Jon
QUOTE (mfratt @ Feb 6 2009, 02:29 AM) I didn't know they made the 4003 in a 5 string...or is that a 4004? Mind if I ask what you paid for it? They don't make any 5 strings at the moment, although supposedly the 4004Cii5 will return at some point in the future. This is a 4003s5 from 1991. I would imagine that it wouldn't be to everyone's taste as the string spacing is definitely narrower than a 'normal' 5 string. It's not a problem for me though. The 's' models have no binding and dot inlays instead of triangular ones. I've seen prices between $1600 and $2600 for these in the past year. Mine was at the low end of that scale. ozzy85
They used to be a bit cheaper a bit ago. Try to find a used one. Or just find a used Mexi-jazz like I have and fix it up to your taste. Not too expensive, it looks cool and plays the way you'd like. Win- win situation here.
Grand Designs
I'm fairly new here, so I guess I'll tell you all about what I have. BASSES: 1) 2007 Rickenbacker 4003, Jetglo 2) 1980 Rickenbacker 4001, White (now yellow ) PREAMPS: 1) SansAmp RPM (for distortion and fuzz sounds. ) 2) SansAmp Bass Driver DI (coupled with the RPM to add compression, filter out the clanking noises, and to restore depth that is lost due to the RPM's suggested overdriven bass setting ) 3) Acoustic 200 watt solid-state head (I use this to run my VIETNAMESE Ampeg 1 by 15'' SVT cabinet (Hey. It serves it's purpose, AND it was cheap. ) AMPS/CABINETS: 1) 220 watt Ampeg BA-210 (2 by 10) for the distorted highs. (ANERICAN MADE BABY!!! ) 2) 400 watt Ampeg SVT 1 by 15 for the uneffected lows. (made in VIET-f*ckin-NAM ) I usually run my Rcks in stereo whenever I want that "Exit...Stage Left" type of sound, but sometimes I run them mono whenever I want to play using fuzzed-out distortion. I run both cabinets fuzzed whenever I do that, except I leave my mids scoooped out on the 2 by 10. I get a sound that kind of resembles John Entwistle's Alembic "Oxplorer" bass. Just listen to the My Generation bass solo on Live At Kilburn, and that will give youa good idea of how it sounds!
