Best modern progressive band you've never heard of.

An absolute "must-have". P-d introduced me to this band, and it was love at first measure, almost. They are incredible.

Back when my friend Grandpa Grizz was alive, he co-hosted my radio show once and he played a 15-minute track form this album. My memory of it was that it was all over the place and some parts were great, but one part actually had a little screamo in it, which kind of killed the rest of the track for me...

A very kind person is sending me a different Riverside album and some other modern prog, so I will definitely be giving it a full and fair listen. smile.gif

If you like "Riverside" check out another Polish band named "Pinkroom".
Germany's "RPWL" are another great prog band (quite Pink Floyish in places).

RPWL is Floydlike but much more mainstream sounding. They do have some decent material.

I am puzzled by rushgoober's omission of Yes's Tales From Topographic Oceans. Concerning Yes, I would highly suggest Close To The Edge as an essential prog record.

I also would strongly disagree with his Jethro Tull picks. Essential prog Tull are the albums, Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. The latter record more so. It is sadly an underrated and misunderstood prog-rock masterpiece that gets dismissed even by other Tull fans. Requires a couple good focused listens for proper absorption. Brilliance.

oops.gif on Tales - I added it in.

Thick is a Brick is great, but it still needs to grow on me more. Passion Play has some really great sections but that cartoony part just kind of kills it for me. Still, both are well worth owning...

The use of alliteration in The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles is what gets me to listen to it.

I admit, when I first listened to A Passion Play, I didn't get it at all...and didn't for years. It's an album that takes a very long time to absorb. So much going on.

I like your earlier list, especially your KC selections!!

I've only just recently discovered Phideaux and I'm very impressed with what I've heard ("Doomsday Afternoon" & "Number Seven") any fans on here who could point me towards another good Phideaux album?

ProgArchives has ratings on releases by that band. I would check out Sylvan as well. They have some great music in a similar Prog vein. Their two best CDs are Posthumous Silence and Artificial Paradise.
