Nibbles is my favorite because I got him from a friend when he was a kitten and he follows me like a shadow. wub.gif

So cute! wub.gif

We got a puppy, completely out of the blue, yesterday. Right now I'm in that "we are crazy for doing this" stage, but Kerry is on top of the world.

Kerry and Coco

We haven't had a pet in over 10 years, so...fingers crossed that we can make this work.

Sooo cute!

I love animals. Dogs are great.

What kind of dog is it?

I have a German Shepherd who sheds like crazy. He's also a big bag o' wind and regularly stinks up the house, but we still love him. He's a bit of an expense but just like having another kid, you find a way to make it work.

The kids love pets, and Kerry will have a blast.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.

She is a mutt. smile.gif No idea what she might be a mix of...her face looks a little like a cocker spaniel, but it's anybody's guess.

I'm feeling marginally more confident after talking to some people in my building here at work, esp. re: the crating during the day. I felt like I was being so mean, but it's a HUGE crate, in a big room with a window, and she has towels and 2 stuffed animals and food and water.

She's going to have to sleep in her crate downstairs till she stops whimpering all night. Got little to no sleep with her in a dog bed in our room - hubby couldn't stand the thought of her downstairs all alone. But after cleaning up puppy poop/puke at 4 a.m., downstairs she went.

I went through the same thing when Sam was a puppy, but the good news is that the crate training also really helps with housebreaking.

Ughhh...I'm feeling SO BAD that Miss Coco is in her crate all alone...for 5 hours now.

I tried crating my German Shepherd when he was a puppy, but he cried and cried and cried for so long, I just gave up on it. What a friggin baby he was! He still is! I couldn't sleep at all with the relentless crying.

Anyway, we finally wound up letting him stay in our room at night. He didn't cry at all during the night, and with the house training we did during the day to get him to use the yard for his business, it only took a couple of weeks before he figured it out. We put down plenty of paper in our room so that cleanup wasn't too bad.

Yeah, it's work and you'll be sleep deprived for a few days if you go that route.

As for during the day, we put up gates (the ones you use to keep babies from entering certain rooms) to keep him in a room with hardwood floors. That way, he wouldn't mess up the carpeting. If you have any relatives or close friends nearby, maybe they'd be willing to let him out once in a while.

So much fun, eh? laugh.gif

But, I'll tell you. I absolutely love my dog. He sits by me when I'm hanging out in the yard, he sleeps next to me when I'm watching TV. I play hide and seek with him all the time. He's like one of my children. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Argh.

I just feel totally overwhelmed.

I suppose one day it'll all be okay.

Maybe.

Don't feel bad at all. The doggy will learn to not pee or poop where she lives and sleeps and will be least apt to have accidents in the house when she's older. It works! She'll be fine. But you have such a soft heart, so I can imagine this is hard for you. hug2.gif

And she will come to see the crate as a safe place, her own little haven when she wants one. Just don't ever put her in it as punishment.

My one dog who was crate trained from puppyhood goes into his crate voluntarily, just to nap or chill or whatever.

It IS hard to not feel like you're jailing them, though!

I just went through the last few pages and all of these animals are so adorable!

GG, that puppy is too cute for words. It's no secret that I want a puppy dog so bad! I'm keeping my eyes open at the local shelters and craigslist. I just want a mutt. It seems like mutts have become the rare breed now.

TONS of pit bulls.

Thanks Janie!

And I think I shall start a thread for puppy advice, 'cause I'm pitiful and need reassurance.

New dog!! He technically belongs to my roommate, but we kind of share pets. His name is Jack and he is a 90 pound Black Lab/German Shepherd/Wolf cross, rescued from extermination. He is terrified of the cats and will climb in your lap because he is convinced he is the size of my two pound guinea pig. tongue.gif

Here he is proving he has super awesome manners (he is only a year old).

And here is Clara, the cat, mothering Suzie, who does not want to be mothered.
