Granted it's certainly got a lot to offer, the drum work alone makes it a classic start to finish in my book.

I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this album, side one especially, and listened and focused JUST on Neil's drumming. Not only is it exemplary of crystal clear production, but just phenomenal drumming. It really is a marvel to listen to, and that's not even considering the amazing bass, guitar, singing and the entire package. Peerless songs...

The sound production of the drums on this does make it great. I wish a few other albums had the same production...not to mention the red Tamas.

(Sorry missed your show last night Goobs. I was investigating a new business venture.)

I remember to this day how flat I felt after first hearing MP, where was anything of the caliber of TSoR? Freewill? Xanadu? LVS? The Trees? Circumstances? By-Tor? Working Man????? Answer - missing.

Still you gotta admire the sheep.

I never disagree with any post on this message board more than this one.

A band's most popular - in sales terms album - seldom coincides with their best work, and MP is no exception.

Completely agree. To me, it doesn't mean Moving Pictures is a bad record, but it's not Rush's best effort.

I) I will give you that MPs sales have two things in their favor: 1) time and 2) the luxury of exposure during Rush's peak years. Let's be honest....PeW helped sell MP. The videos on MTV helped sell ANYTHING Rush in the 80s. Rush was more exposed during this time frame than any other in their history, say from 1979-1986, or thereabouts. That said......Moving Pictures IS a masterpiece. If I was to pick one studio album of Rush's to own, this would be the one....there is no doubt in my mind.

II) I don't think too many people on this board like being called "sheep" so you might want to cease with the provocative namecalling.

Look, it's EASY to pin-point a band's most popular record as overrated.  You can do that with Kiss's Destroyer too.  And let's face it, MP is Rush's most widely popular LP.  Frankly it's not even close because mostly it's older diehards (and prog fans) who own 2112.  MP was and remains a more widely accessible album.  It's more mainstream...has shorter, more radio-friendly songs, contains their all-time most-well-known tune, etc.

Still and all there's often a REASON it's so widely admired beyond being a "darling."  Now that may not jive with your own tastes, fine enough.  You like Coke, I dig Pepsi...so be it.  But I think it's generally safe to say that Moving Pictures is only overrated in your own mind, much like nice tits are overrated...or a Porsche Carrera is overrated.  You're a legs man...or you dig a Maserati instead.  Cool.

But Moving Pictures is still the bomb-digity.  That's as close to FACT as it gets when discussing Rush-related "opinion."  I'll stand by it too.  We'll always quibble about the merits of Vapor Trails and Counterparts, but not Moving Pictures.  Not really...

A band's most popular - in sales terms album - seldom coincides with their best work, and MP is no exception. It may be a competent and reasonably cohesive album, but sure as eggs is eggs it ain't Rush at their best.

I remember to this day how flat I felt after first hearing MP, where was anything of the caliber of TSoR? Freewill? Xanadu? LVS? The Trees? Circumstances? By-Tor? Working Man????? Answer - missing.

You know, it's fine that you feel it's overrated. I'll also agree that a band's best-selling album, is not always their very best.

But when it comes to Rush, there is little doubt that Moving Pictures is THE ONE that fits both.

The problem I have is your line calling people "sheep" for believing in this.

I can't speak for everyone, but I can damn sure tell you with 100% confidence that I personally could care less if MP only sold one copy (mine wink.gif ) or 50 million. It doesn't change what's on the actual record, and I what I believe to be the greatest album of all-time. You could spend years with MP under the microscope, and IMO, you won't find a damn flaw anywhere on it. It's perfect.

The lyrics, the music, the songs, the length, and the production. The boys were on absolute fire at the time, and it paid off in the form of this album.

With that said, I agree...those other songs you mentioned are absolute pieces of artwork. I love them all, and a few of those happen to be my favourite Rush tracks. However, I've never listened to MP and thought that those were 'missing'.

There really is nothing I could change on MP to make it better. That's how much I personally love the record. Just my opinion. 1022.gif

Oh yeah... well... I have Geddy's personal copy. Signed by him. With his kid's grilled cheese stain on it. And Geddy must have gnawed on the corner, because there's teeth marks, so I have Geddy's DNA now, too. I could make my own Geddy Lee. So nyah-nyah-nyah!
