Mandalorian Hunter
QUOTE (naturalsciences101 @ May 15 2009, 05:09 PM) I don't think what I'm saying here is opinion at all. Or, the fact that the media latched onto the Natalie Halloway case over ALL other similiar cases also happens to be only my opinion too. The analogy is killer. I don't see Mastodon as has having ANY crossover appeal. That's why you've received such a reaction from me. That the reason why I'm so astounded over their popularity. Mastodon are an excellent, excellent band with, I think, absolutely no mainstream-crossover appeal at all. That's why I can't see why a person who REALLY liks something like Crack The Skye would differentiate between that awesomely solid effort and what Intronaut or Baroness has recently done. If ya like one, it SHOULD mean that you would like this particular genre of music as a WHOLE, and it should follow that you would look into these other titles and like them as well. That's what's called 'logic'. Mastodon doesn't sound like, nor will they ever be a mainstream-crossover band. There is nothing POP in their sound at all. Not a shred. 1) They do have crossover appeal. That's been established and proved by them gaining more fans of different genres. They have elements from other musical genres which would obviously appeal to other fans. And this why people might not like other bands of that genre. Take Gojira for example. Yes, them and Mastodon were similar in the thrashy bits. Did I see any other resembelances? None whatsoever. Because Mastodon have different bits added into the mix. 2) You're getting Mainstream mixed up with Pop music. If you're taking 'Pop' as its proper meaning (Popular), then Mastodon are actually a Pop band. But if you're not then you're getting into an almighty tangle. AC/DC are mainstream, Foo Fighters are mainstream, Green Day are mainstream, Led Zeppelin are mainstream, Muse are mainstream, Guns n Roses are mainstream, Iron Maiden are mainstream, so does that make them Pop? Not one bit.
naturalsciences101
The last three Lamb of God albums have been huge . Lots of attention doled out to these guys. The one in the middle, 'Sacrament' is a great, great album. 8/10 of that recording is really memorable. Hook after hook. That's a tour that makes sense, right there. Mastodon/Lamb of God. Still, I have to say, if you like Mastodon, please check out the five or six other recordings mentioned a couple pages back. You will not be disappointed. Especially the Baroness and Giant Squid recordings. I was literally left with open jaw after hearing those two and how frakkin innovative they are. Has anyone heard anything from the Grayceon link on CygnalsChick's thread? That band has totally reinvented Metal. And, Obscura will play with yer head. Super-talented. tangy
well i saw Mastodon a few weeks ago and had a few random recollections of the show i wanted to post. first off, just a great show overall. amazing musicians. i was roughly 10 rows back. to my dissapointment Brent did not break out a banjo for the intro for Divinantions. he did break out a 12 string and played a surprising amount of the show upon it. All the really technical jams from crack the skye were played without flaw, in particular that crazy drumming section in tract #3, Quintessence. Wow. I thought Bladecatcher would be the highlight of the second half but Capallarian crest just had an insane groove....... Speaking of Bladecatcher, I was amused to see Brent whistling for that crazy scratching sound on that song. not sure if thats how it was done in the studio but still cool nonetheless........ to make a long story short- go see mastodon! I love BTBAM but understand they are not everyones cup of tea. To me it makes the lineup stronger however I would say not to miss this show just because you don't like the opener. I caught the first leg of this tour and was not familar with any of the openers but I say go for the headliner not the opening act. If you have not seen the CTS tour yet, I think you should go as it is an amazing show. Edited February 10, 2010 by tangy
