Jack Aubrey
Thanks to Variety: QUOTE Pre-production is about to get under way on the two-part "Hobbit." Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are expected to pen the scripts under the direction of Peter Jackson and del Toro. Preliminary contact has already been made with at least three actors whose "Lord of the Rings" characters also appear in the "Hobbit" storyline: Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum). Jack here: I was expecting McKellen and Serkis, but Mortensen is a nice surprise. It'll be great to see him reprise his role as Aragorn! I know my wife will be happy! theredtamasrule
Coolness. I'm surprised to see Mortensen's name, mainly because it makes me curious about how they're going to weave Aragorn into the story...perhaps the LOTR appendices will play a part in the films. I don't care for that Boyens woman. I hope her writing has improved greatly since the LOTR movies.

Otherwise, the story will veer to far off the original (like TRotK, when Frodo sends Sam away right before entering Shelob's lair. Damn near blew the whole trilogy for me.) Damn near blew the whole trilogy for me... There were several events that deviated the movie plot greatly from the book plot and had me rolling my eyes but visually I think the movies were phenomenal at bringing Tolkien's Middle-Earth to life...if only they followed the books a little closer. Speaking of, it's about time for a new package release of the trilogy (super-platinum director cut?) with more deleted scenes or commentary or something for the nerds to throw their money at...they could keep that cash cow going for a long, long time if they really wanted to. I know my dorky ass would prolly buy one dammit.

Skirmshander
I would assume that Vidggo's stuff will be for the second movie. They're doing the hobbit, as well as a fill in to bridge the Hobbit and LOTR. maybe tracking gollum??? investigating the necromancer???(i know this was gandalf but....) Rowan
Thanks for posting I hadn't seen that. The LOTR trilogy is probably one of my favorite sets of books ever and I thought Peter Jackson did a very good job with the movies. I'm excited to see what he does with The Hobbit. I hope he has a big role in this one!

The Owl
Wait!..... Jackson is co-directing? I thought he was just the executive producer? But having Fran, and Phillipia back is pretty cool......Pretty much the same production Staff as LOTR Im pretty sure Howard Shore will score the films as well. And Alan Lee and John Howe are the production designers....then I will be sound as a pound.

But I think it will be a cameo in Rivendell if you go by the books timeline and story line. Aragorn was only 10 years old at the time of The Hobbit. However the writers aren't afraid to move away from the original story so who knows how it will work out???!!! I love the hunting the Necromancer idea....another thought might be Aragorn as a guide before the dwarves and Bilbo get to Rivendell...he was a ranger in those parts. Del_Duio
I wonder where the 1st movie would end? They might not even get to Smaug (or is it Smog) at all, I'd guess. Also: Watching the extended version of LotR not long ago and they had that scene with "Bilbo's trolls" that got turned to stone. I guess we'll get to see this in action no doubt. I sure as hell hope they get another actor for Bilbo though. He was the worst IMO.

theredtamasrule
Not that it's surprising but the Jackson/Walsh/Boyens trio is officially signed on to write The Hobbit along with Del Toro. Great... All nuance & charm are sure to be beaten out of the book and we can have another couple of heavy handed movies with ham-fisted dialogue and ridiculous characters that little resemble those in the book. In order to force the required romance perhaps they'll turn Bard into a Princess rather than a King and call her Barwen! I hope Del Toro's vision even's out the Wingnut Trio's inability to write a decent script. Article. Necromancer
I've got wood. Nothing better than boring ass stories about gay midgets going for a walk. This should be another blockbuster in the making.
