Moonraker
I got into a bit of the Clash and Social Distortion. Punk generally isnt my style of music though. Punk as it used to be is quite dead though, all of these new bands wish they had they had somthing to bitch about. The genre to me just seemed like a lot of misplaced anger and glorifying teenage anxst, why be so outwardly angry?

rushgoober
i never got into punk, however there is some psychedelic punk from the late 60's (yes, such a thing exists) that was pretty good.
Dweezil
THere's good punk and bad punk I'm more of an Indie/experimental/classic rock person myself. Although I have some classic punk favorites. I dress/do hair like I do because I like it and I can. Not because I think I'm a punk rocker. Although back in the day, my behaviour was quite antisocial

madra sneachta
All I can do is quote those lost giants of Scottish music Hugh Reed and the Velvet Underpants - "I want to be a punk rocker but my mammy wil'nae let me" My favourites from the 76-82 period tend to be Joy Division, Wire, Gang of Four etc., whose influences are being seen more than ever today in bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads etc. However, I agree with ABZ - The spirit of 'Punk' is probably best distilled in that immortal intro - 1,2,3,4 - Gabba Gabba Hey!!!!!! GeddyRulz
I went through a "punk phase" (ironically, it was followed by a "folk phase") in my late teens/early twenties. My favorite band was 7Seconds - a Reno band led by Kevin Seconds - whose political lyrics were probably way too Liberal for most of y'all here. I also loved the "Black and White" album by The Stranglers; it was very melodic (and even somewhat "progressive") with tempo changes and virtuosic musicanship; something you usually don't hear in punk music. Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, Ministry... I also liked a lot of "New Wave" bands and albums. "True Colours" by Split Enz was great.
progrush2112
Clash, clash, and more clash. Panic! at the Disco is really good. So are All American Rejects and Yellowcard. Blink 182 was good back in the day. Green Day has grown on me. I can't stand Sum 41 though. And I dunno if you'd call them punk, but Reel Big Fish is really good too. barchetta90480
QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ Apr 2 2006, 08:27 PM) I also loved the "Black and White" album by The Stranglers Yeah, that one rocked - Nice'n'Sleazy became kind of the soundtrack to my life for a few months back then. Yet, is that really a punk record??? Does Bad Religion count? It's the punkiest band I can actually stand. Some great tunes back in the early and mid-90s. "Generator" still is among my all-time favorite albums. Ramones and Clash are classics, of course. Everybody who thinks punk must be necessarily stupid should be FORCED to give "London Calling" a listen. Ah yes ... had my folk-after-punk-phase, too. Brought me to New Model Army. It always bugs me when people copy others' material, though. I hear a lot of stuff that is an imitation of something else. Maybe the Clash meant for it to be a humorous take, I don't know. Punk usually makes me laugh. There often seems to be a comedic value to it. It is not something I ever took seriously, though.
barchetta90480
At least it has some comedic value. Nothing's worse than those HipHop gangsta puppies who actually think theyshould be taken for real. And they don't even cover, the sample... BTW, let's not forget that a lot of Rush's debut had a lot of "stolen tunes"as well.
