The K Man
HAHA Good shit. From Scenes to Systematic they were the best in the world at what they do. The rest can bite me. Change that to I&W to 6DOIT, and I agree. From the years 1992-2002, they were arguably the best band; five great studio albums and an EP with one of their best tunes. I like all of their albums to some extent - although SC leaves a bit to be desired, and Black Holes is difficult to listen to in one sitting since four of the six songs are long ones - but 1992-2002 was the good stuff. I do like all three Mangini era albums a lot, as well. They are collectively better than the last three with Portnoy, but they just can't touch Awake, I&W or Scenes. I used to enjoy them man but once Kevin Moore left the writing turned to third grade prog snobbery, A text book cover band Dream Theater is beyond intellectual and are absolutely incredible with their instruments. Sadly the Ice Cream Theater is cold as ice. The Dream Theater System is Chaos. This band has no SOUL. James Brown would hate this band.
Segue Myles
Systematic Chaos is ok if I ignore the lyrics and skip two or three songs. The Astonishing is something I doubt I will ever play again. So when I inevitably do (it is me after all), I hope to enjoy it more.

Back in the fuckking early 90's. Even I thought Dream Theater were the next RUSH. Boy was I ever WRONG. Soulless Prog Cock Rock For the World Masses. Randy Castillo had octobans above his kit too. Randy blows Moist Mangina away. RIP
Rod in Toronto
I listened to Systematic Chaos during my run yesterday. I still maintain my opinion that it´s a great album, but hard to be fully digested. There´s too much information in it, and way too many songs to absorb. When it was released I just didn´t want to give it the dedicated listen it deserves. That has changed over time though.

Actually...right now I am not into Rush so its probably best I keep quiet as my feelings are biased haha. I am eager to revisit DT for some reason. I keep having random songs play in my head! Day of Light
God, it would be a modern masterpiece if they kicked some of the ballads, and rocked a little harder. Imagine if it was Scenes length.
Segue Myles
I hear nothing on The Astonishing that would stand out as classic if the length was reduced.

Day of Light
I hear nothing on The Astonishing that would stand out as classic if the length was reduced. I hear nothing on The Wall or Quadrophenia that stands out as particularly riveting, but they're considered the best rock operas of all time.
