117. “Lessons”, Track 4/6 (3:51), 2112 (1976)

2112 - Entry 1 out of 6

Our first 2112 entry is the one where Alex gets his hands on whole songwriting credits! Problem is, you can tell that Alex is not very comfortable writing lyrics accompanied with music. I know that this is a reflection of Alex's never giving up on his dreams as a kid, but the lyrics are quite pedestrian to include on an album like 2112, especially with lyrics that include "Sweet memories flashing very quickly by/Reminding me and giving me a reason why/I know that my goal is more than a thought/I'll be there when I teach what I've been taught". It's not quite a callback to the debut, so I'll give it that - but I hear this as a leftover from Fly By Night. Shame that I haven't yet shared my thoughts on the instrumentation, because it has a great fade-in intro, groovin' bass and screechy guitars.

Previously on my list...

121. “Good News First”, Track 11/13 (4:51)  - Entry 6/13, Snakes & Arrows (2007)
120. “Lakeside Park”, Track 3/5 (4:07) - Entry 2/5, Caress Of Steel (1975)
119. “Carnies”, Track 5/12 (4:53) - Entry 3/12, Clockwork Angels (2012)
118. “Take A Friend”, Track 3/8 (4:27) - Entry 3/8, Rush (1974)
117. “Lessons”, Track 4/6 (3:51) - Entry 1/6, 2112 (1976)

How is this album doing?

6. “Lessons”, Track 4/6 (3:51) - #117/173

Good call, can't disagree.

Absolutely a Fly By Night type song. Pairs well with Best I Can- which Rutsey drummed on live.

I like Lessons. I have it 135th. It's in the pack with a lot of songs I like, but it's not I song I would ever place near the top.

Nope . Top 50.

This is part of my Obscure Four, and I love all these songs:
Lessons
Tears
Entre Nous
Different Strings.

As a subset of my hit 6 which includes
Something for Nothing
In The End.

Top 50, all of em'. :)

Yeah, this seems right. Kind of forgettable from that album, but that album is a pretty high bar. Good work here.

I would agree with your comments about the lyrics and that its one of the weakest songs on 2112.  Thing is, even if it is the weakest song on 2112, that still makes it a top 100 song.  I would rank it much higher than you have it.

116. “How It Is”, Track 6/13 (4:04), Vapor Trails (2002)

Vapor Trails - Entry 6 out of 13

This song had the most significant makeover from the remix, and for the better. The strings were drowned out in the original mix, whereas the song overall didn't get executed well. If it weren't for the remix, this would be bottom 15 for sure. With all of that being said, this is an adult contemporary tune which gives us a refreshing break from the alternative grunge preceding it. Though I am not a huge fan of how the vocals were mixed throughout most of the verses, it doesn't completely keep this song from trying to be on the emotional side. The part that goes "Foot upon the stair/Shoulder to the wheel/You can't tell yourself not to care/You can't tell yourself how to feel/That's how it is" was always done quite beautifully (except in the original mix - yeah, the loudness war killed this one for me).

How it Is was one of the few songs off Vapor Trails I immediately liked. It took awhile for that album to click for me. Earthshine was always my favorite and still is, but How It Is was second even before the remix. It's third now, after Nocturne- that song really grew on me. And a few others (especially Ghost Rider) really climbed up the ladder.

I'm surprised the original mix was so low for you.

It's 61st on my list.

Obviously all of the songs on the VT Remix sound better than the original. Given that, there are few songs that lost some of their "magic" from the admittedly ear-blistering original mix. Ceiling Unlimited lost some of its intensity and gained a useless guitar solo that was left out of the original for a reason, while How It Is got a huge lift. For me, the better-sounding remix of this song wouldn't affect it's position on a list. I like the song no matter what.

I haven't included this song on my list yet --  working backwards I'm up to 106 so I have it ranked higher than this.

We must have reached the point on the list where we've shaded from things I don't really like to things I really do like; I looked at this one and said "Oh, that's a great track!" Given what's yet to come, I don't know how much higher I'd have it ranked it, but this seems to be the right neighborhood.

You may proceed!

You make a lot of interesting points that I agree with here.  Yes, the remix is significantly different with this song and for the better.  By indicating that if not for the remix it would be a bottom 15 song you are going with something I said in the past, namely that the original album and the remix are basically 2 different albums.  I also like the sort of break from the grunge sound.  That being said, no matter if you are dealing with the original or the re-mix its still a weak song.  Much lower for me.

115. “Workin’ Them Angels”, Track 3/13 (4:48), Snakes & Arrows (2007)

Snakes & Arrows - Entry 7 out of 13

A fun, straightforward rocker with a mandolin that can be found during the bridge. This was definitely one of the tunes from the album the band has most fun producing and performing live. Solid track.

Good tune. I don't know if Neil ever mentioned this, but I wonder if this was meant to be a sequel to Ghost Rider.

Snakes & Arrows - Entry 7 out of 13

A fun, straightforward rocker with a mandolin that can be found during the bridge. This was definitely one of the tunes from the album the band has most fun producing and performing live. Solid track.

The first time I listened to this album their was one song that really stood out as awesome.  This was it.

BTW - the next time I listened to the album, this and The Main Monkey Business stood out.  The next time the 2 I mentioned stood out as did The Larger Bowl.  The next time  - add Far Cry.  The next time - add A & S.  The next time add Hope.  The next time - well you get the idea.  I really like S & A as an album and this song grabbed me write away and never let go.

Its a top 20 song for me.  Yes - you read that right.  Top 20.

Bet that will leave some in a state of shock. But its honest.

I don't know if any of the first 5,000 words that come to mind when people hear this song would be "fun".

I've got Workin' Them Angels 64th on my list and second off Snakes.

I re-listened just now before checking my ranking.

I have definitely changed my mind. It's a very good song but it isn't that good.

I'm not changing it, though, as my rankings as described here and in L@BT's thread are reflective of one specific day in my life. And I guess on that day, this song really resonated with me.

114. “Alien Shore”, Track 6/11 (5:45), Counterparts (1993)

Counterparts - Entry 4 out of 11

A much stronger straightforward rockin' tune from the album that has a good funk to it. May not be one of the more interesting tracks from Counterparts for me, but the lyrics here are definitely a highlight for progressive rock in 1993. "You and I, we are pressed into these solitudes/Color and culture, language and race/Just variations on a theme/Islands in a much larger stream".

I don't know if I value the lyrics too much, but Geddy is definitely slappin' da bass, and that's enough for me.

Alien Shore is 63rd on my list and 4th off Counterparts. It has risen over the years, and I can certainly say I really like the song.

Two of your bottom four off Counterparts are in my top four, and two are at the bottom. Not much else to say- 63rd or 114th- for Rush those are all middle of the pack songs.

Based on the couple of other comments here, I may have to go listen to this again, but I've never much rated this song, couldn't hum you the melody right now, and don't remember a single lyric. This one seems high.
