126. "The Speed Of Love", Track 7/11 (5:02), Counterparts (1993)

Counterparts - Entry 3 out of 11

Usually claimed as the worst song from the album, this does seem like the generic outlier ballad from Counterparts. However, this one does highlight the album's sonics with Geddy's bass and the snappy drums; the clean Lifeson solo especially reminds me of mid-80's Rush. An under-appreciated tune.

Previously on my list...

131. “The Seeker”, Track 4/8 (3:27) - Entry 6/8, Feedback (2004)
130. “Ceiling Unlimited”, Track 2/13 (5:28) - Entry 4/13, Vapor Trails (2002)
129. “Test For Echo”, Track 1/11 (5:56) - Entry 7/11, Test For Echo (1996)
128. ”Halo Effect”, Track 6/12 (3:14) - Entry 2/12, Clockwork Angels (2012)
127. “Making Memories”, Track 6/8 (2:58) - Entry 2/8, Fly By Night (1975)
126. “The Speed Of Love”, Track 7/11 (5:02) - Entry 3/11, Counterparts (1993)

How is this album doing?

11. “Double Agent”, Track 8/11 (4:52) - #143/173
10. “Between Sun & Moon”, Track 5/11 (4:37) - #139/173
9. “The Speed Of Love”, Track 7/11 (5:02) - #126/173

I still have yet to uncover "Animate", "Stick It Out", "Cut To The Chase", "Nobody's Hero", "Alien Shore", "Leave That Thing Alone", "Cold Fire", and "Everyday Glory".

It would be really easy just to hit the play button so I could remember how awful this song is and come up with a worthy insult, yet I still can't bring myself to do it.

Another example of a Rush song that doesn't sound like Rush. It sounds like the most commercial version of U2 mixed with Jefferson "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" Starship. It's icky. It's a bottom-10 song for me.

I would agree that its under appreciated although I rank it higher than you do.  Easy top 100 song.  Very enjoyable.  Excellent lyrics.   Much better (IMO) than Animate or Stick it Out or Leave That Thing Alone - the 3 dogs (again, IMO) of an otherwise excellent album.

125. "Nocturne", Track 11/13 (4:49)Vapor Trails (2002)

Vapor Trails - Entry 5 out of 13

This is definitely one of the few tracks that they threw in last minute just for that beefy 67-minute CD length. Despite being a bit generic, it ends up being one of the most sonically interesting tracks on Vapor Trails; all three members embrace full-on energy, especially Geddy with his loud, pumping bass.

Ceiling Unlimited and Nocturne below the annoyingly unlistenable  Freeze?

I have to admit, at first the opening lyrics made me not want to listen to any more of the song, I gave it another chance and now its in the my five songs on a top ten album.  This is much too low.

I would rank this song much lower.  But since its off VT thats not a shock - to say I dislike it is an understatement.  The very bottom of the barrel for me is Dog Ears and Virtuality, then VT.

Interestingly you ranked Peaceable Kingdom as the bottom of the barrel from VT.  Not that I really like it but, for me, it and Ghost Rider are the 2 best song on the album.

Next please - keep these fascinating rankings coming.

This is one of the better songs from VT.  The contrast between the verses and the choruses, and that killer pre-chorus riff. This is ranked too low.

Nocturne is a to 3 song on VT for me usually, and absolutely a top 5 always. Freeze is just noise, Sweet Miracle is annoying, and Secret Touch is utterly forgettable.

It took awhile for me to enjoy VT, and I really do now. Nocturne was one of the few I liked right away.

124. “Chain Lightning”, Track 2/11 (4:33)Presto (1989)

Presto - Entry 9 out of 11

After the opening track, you can already identify one of the album's biggest issues: the mixing. Oh boy, is it so thin and really seems to restrain the presence of any energy that may be found deep within the album. However, this song certainly does pump quite some energy before their creativity seems to wane off. It has a thumping rhythm and bass, along with a wailing Lifeson solo worth checking out.

Chain Lightning is the best song off Presto, but I can't quibble with it being third on this list. But overall it's far higher for me. I have it 53rd right now.

Not a terrible song. The backwards guitar solo is pretty cool. I probably would have ranked it somewhere in this vicinity.

My least favourite off the Presto album. Yes, lower than Anagram, Red Tide etc. It just has never gelled with me.

Previously on my list...

131. “The Seeker”, Track 4/8 (3:27) - Entry 6/8, Feedback (2004)
130. “Ceiling Unlimited”, Track 2/13 (5:28) - Entry 4/13, Vapor Trails (2002)
129. “Test For Echo”, Track 1/11 (5:56) - Entry 7/11, Test For Echo (1996)

Not surprisingly I would rank it high than you did.  Its another top 100 song for me.

This is about right, IMO.  Maybe the second best song off a bad album.   I think "The Pass" is grossly overrated.

Agreed about The Pass.

Sure it's a good song,

But I imagine it's most people's favorite of that album.

Also agreed that it is not a great album.

Chain Lightning is easily my favorite off this album, but it still didn't crack my top 50.

Sorry I haven't posted daily as I thought I would be - I'm not feeling very well at the moment, hoping to return to daily posts in a few days.

Whenever, man. We'll be here.

As for "Chain Lightning" . . . sure? It's forgettable for me, but you've left yourself with the two best songs from that album, so it must be fine hereabouts.

Folks, a whistleblower reached out to me and informed me that the next song on hi_water's list is Hemispheres, and he's been stalling for the past week because he fears the outrage and the backlash. Understandable.

That would be a good way for him to quit the list if he was tired of doing it, there's no point to do all of that typing for an audience of zero.
