Was lead guitarists/guitar solos better in the 70s or the 80s?

I would say they were definitely better in the 80s. In the 80s, you had players like EVH, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Vito Bratta etc. that all had a very unique sound and approach to the guitar.

I'm sorry, but in the 70s, a lot of lead guitar sounded very pedestrian and similar to one another. It wasn't until EVH and then Randy Rhoads busted on the scene that guitar players got a boot up the ass that they needed.

HAHAHA!

MYLES RULES!

FRAROC YOU!

I like your threads. Don't understand "I Can't See For Myles and all of his hate.

Great question!!

Surprised this isn't a poll.

Glad it isn't.

I can't vote on this one.

80's for me but man the 70's were great too.

Why would Eddie and Randy get put in the 80's because of more fame?

Those cats started out and kicked ass in the 70's.

Hello????

Randy kicked ass on the first two Quiet Riot albums.

Priest, Maiden, RUSH all 70s.

Sorry PAT!

I'm changing my mind.

The best solos are from the FUCKKING SEVENTIES!

The greatest decade of MUSIC ON PLANET EARTH!

FUKK MODERN MUSIC!

FUCKK THE GRAMMYS!

This thread proves to me that ROCK IS DEAD.

Name the best guitar players and their solos in 2017-2018??????

ZERO!

EVH’s best stuff for me are on Van Halen 1 and 2...released in ‘78 and ‘79 respectively. But using the demented, TRF PeW mentality, it means that both are ‘60s albums. :P

If this were a simple, two option poll, the 80s would’ve been easily beaten.

Which is “better”? Totally unanswerable.

Which do you PREFER? This thread has spoken and it’s without a doubt the 70s.

The pseudo great masturbate debate about albums released in 1980 that are 80's records to me is so ridiculous and stupid.

Numbers and time don't lie. DUH!

RUSH went into the studio on September 26th 1979!

The music on PERMANENT WAVES WAS RECORD IN THE SEVENTIES!

"WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" was released on March 26th 1980! HENCE IT WAS RECORDED IN 1979! A SEVENTIES RECORDING!!

ALEX AND EDDIE RULE MORE IN THE SEVENTIES!

CAPS ON FOR YOU HATERS!

I saw there were two new pages since my last post and got worried my lengthy bit had sparked some kind of nasty argument, then I discovered that Earl had just shown up.

Love your style Earl, rock on!

70's all day, every day.

But SRV, Knopfler, Randy, EVH, Mustaine and Slash kicked ass in the 80's.

When it comes to the 80's I have to give a special credit to a guy called SLASH (who is underappreacited by many rock fans) for bringing a natural 70's hard rock guitar style to the 80's and for not being a mindless wanker(or masturbator) like many others!

EVH 70's > EVH 80's!!!! DUH!!!!!

This one I think you got wrong, Earl. 1981's Fair Warning, from that opening sequence, to the monster run at the beginning of Dirty Movies, to the riff that drives Unchained, to the change of pace that is Push Comes to Shove, to the lead break of So This is Love?, to the closing solo of One Foot Out the Door, is Eddie's finest hour.

My thoughts on why Slash is fantastic almost exactly. At a time when everyone else may as well have been playing a "Frankenstrat" and have decorated their guitars with crazy stripes, Slash was unique.
