  2. I think this is at Rockfield Studios in England, maybe recording Xanadu. My guess would be the intro to AFTK Could be. I've heard/read the descriptions of them playing outside of the studio, with Alex walking around between the mics as he played the classical guitar. I guess it would completely change my mental image though if I knew they were dressed like this ;) I always pictured them in their kimono outfits of the time (although who knows - maybe they never wore those things outside of photo ops).
  3. My original answer was Hemispheres, and I don't think I'll change it. But after having listened to Moving Pictures a dozen times or so since my post, it really is an amazing piece of work. I love the variety of songs and how fantastic and tight their playing was. The use of synths was getting more interesting, but still mostly a backseat to their guitar/bass/drum foundation. They really are in top form at that point .. they must have felt so good when that album was completed and they got to listen to the final product. Some random highlights for me: - The guitar harmonics opening Red Barchetta are always neat to me. I'm used to hearing guitarists play a single or several harmonics for effect. I love the way he strings them together here to make an entire intro and outro. - The bass on YYZ is insane - he manages to play so many notes so fast! One day I'll be able to play this at full speed .. maybe - Limelight is such a solid tune, especially that guitar opening. Fantastic drum fills too. What a perfectly crafted rockout song. - The synth intro to The Camera Eye always blows my mind with the way it sets a mood. Reminds me of listening to the soundtrack of a great sci-fi movie (another intro like this is to "I'll Wait" by Van Halen, which coincedentally also uses the followup model of Oberheim synth). - I personally love Witch Hunt, especially the way it grows and the synths get bigger and bigger. There is also a subtle change to the chord sequence partway through that is neat (I didn't notice it until sitting down to learn it). I also like the brief bass solo where he plays this one note that sounds blue or odd. - The change in the drums on Vital Signs always gets me. I like the pseudo-electric minimal sound in the beginning, but then it switches to total rock out at the end. Neat use of sequencer (for the second time I believe at this point). Geddy's brief bass solos are also great here too.
  4. I wonder what ballpark timeframe those guys have for opening the new place. Looks like they still have a long way to go. Museum and/or recording school sounds like a neat way to use the place. I've wanted to go there mainly just to see the outdoors around the studio. All the descriptions I've read make it sound extremely peaceful and relaxing (either in the spring/summer time or with a nice blanket of snow on the ground).
  5. Time Stand Still (and the rest of HYF). I guess something about Neil passing made me want to listen to this again. I read a post somewhere that said how proud he was of that album, and how he liked to listen to it cranked up.
  6. Petition signed. Don't know if there's any reasonable chance of them giving Rush a dedicated channel .. but that would be amazing if they did. The Beatles channel does a good job at playing studio cuts, live cuts, influences, solo material, etc. They also have a lot of fascinating hosts and interviews and special bits. Doing the same approach to a Rush channel would be great, I would never turn it off (to the chagrin of everyone else in the car)! Don't recall what all I heard last night besides more debut album stuff (Before and After (again) and In the Mood). The only 90s material I've heard so far is Neurotica from RTB .. nothing close to their more modern releases yet.
  7. I listened while on a long road trip yesterday. First song I heard was Fountain of Lamneth - wow! Some others were Need Some Love, Before and After, Neurotica, and Middletown Dreams. I don't know if they're going for deep tracks or not, but it was neat to hear some lesser known stuff (I admit I completely forgot about those other tracks off the debut album). I do hope that all us Rush nerds tuning in will make them consider adding a permanent channel .. *fingers crossed*
  8. I can't help it, I just love this photo no matter how many times I see it. Neil doesn't look particularly happy to be there, but he's sort of dealing with it.   9. That is interesting, didn't realise that. I'd always assumed it was a synth or mellotron. That sound drove me crazy forever. It sounded kind of like strings, but not quite. The Minimoog is floating around in the high top part. I wasn't aware of them using a Mellotron again on this album. As soon as my buddy loaned me the 40th anniversary set, I turned and found this in the booklet: "They had built a brand new reverb echo chamber," recalled Alex, "Which was basically a big room which was all tiled with mics set up at different distances to capture different reverb times. I recorded some guitar stuff in there trying to create a sort of a string ensemble for 'Madrigal'. There was no light in it so we brought in one bare light bulb. It was very odd. You couldn't speak loudly in there because it was so reverberant it would drive you mental. I had my amp set up there and my volume pedal and my effects and did it right there in that room. We had most of the song done and then we added that as we would if we had brought in a string quartet or something."

  12. I'd love to know what kind of computer setup they were referring to. Anyone know? Apparently whatever it was made listening through the individual tracks easier. Interesting too how they both pronounce 'Madrigal' oddly when they start talking about it, then later they both pronounce it the 'normal' way. I would have loved to hear more about that song's origins and production .. one of my favorite songs off AFTK. I wondered forever how they made the string quartet sound in the background until the 40th anniversary set came out (and it described Alex doing all that on a guitar in the echo chamber).
  13. I always wonder about the teeth and eye too. I guess they are somehow part of the image of “pressure”. PS - This just came up in the Hugh Syme interview thread. He said to him the three shapes in the middle were just an interesting non-specific texture to put there. So they aren’t plane wings or rusting razor blades or anything.
  14. Neat interview, he has a goldmine of interesting background stories and details. I'd love to pick up one of those signed prints (if only they were slightly less pricey) I can't find it again now, but didn't Hugh say that to him it was just an interesting shape/texture to put there? And that only the 'cocaine' critic called it a razor blade? (Edit - Found it, around 8:00 in - he says a lot of people think they are rusting razor blades, and the one critic made the accusation about cocaine - but he just considers them "texture and elements, not specific") I have always been curious about the rest of that cover though (especially the weird eye, teeth, bones, bald dude, ..)

  19. As much as I love Hemispheres, these lyrics always sound slightly corny to me: Apollo was astonished; Dionysus thought me mad. But they heard my story further, And they wondered, and were sad. Describing the gods feeling 'mad' and 'sad' and 'astonished' always sounds a little silly to me. On the flip side, I always like how the timbre of Geddy's voice changes when he gets to this part (going from rough to the clean almost childish timbre from part one): Some who did not fight Brought tales of old to light. My Rocinante' sailed by night On her final flight. To the heart of Cygnus' fearsome force We set our course. Spiralled through that timeless space To this immortal place.
  20. I would pick Hemispheres just because that's my favorite era of Rush and I love the instrumentation and atmosphere they put into it and AFTK. Perfect mix of acoustic/electric, dabbles of synthesizers, interesting quasi-fantasy lyrics, all that percussion, .. Moving Pictures has great songs too (and more of them), and it is another bump in the technological direction they were headed. Tighter playing, more synths and sequences, lyrics about 'warm memory chips' and 'random samples'. I like them both but if I have to pick between the two, I'll still pick Hemispheres.
  21. That was pretty damn cool! Didn’t know it was possible to squeeze even more notes into that song than Rush already did. Would have liked to have heard the Hammond organ worked into the shredding too.
  22. (Replying to myself instead of editing the previous post to add all this ..) After asking around on other boards, it looks like it’s a Urei 964 Digital Metronome. Presumably to set the DS-2 sequencer tempo and give a click output to Neil (guess it was only for Spirit of Radio at that point). Neat, I never heard of them using a click that early .. you only hear about that for later stuff like The Weapon and Red Sector A. What's also interesting is that he doesn't appear to have this metronome at the start of the PeW tour. At some point in the tour they redid his rig to add the Korg echo and metronome, and moved a few things around (like adding the table/shelves to his left for the effects, metronome, sequencer, top 4 SEMs from the Oberheim 8 voice, and the OB-1). Geez, I gotta find a way to ask Jack Secret about this stuff again .. Anyway, the quest continues for the vocal effect source .. seems like it would have to be in that rig somewhere if he has all his other effects right there within reach. My current guess is still that he's running his vocals through the Minimoog filter and then through the Roland Space Echo. Need more inside info ;)

    Isolated tracks

    At this moment I'm looking for an isolated Subdivisions synth track that used to be on YouTube. I've got the isolated track that I bought from Jammit (when it was still around), but this one from YouTube sounded different. I'm guessing there are several layers of synths on that song. That being said, I like listening to any Rush isolated tracks .. so having a huge collection saved would be cool (so I don't have to worry about them disappearing in the future).

I think you have to buy a 4TB Hard Drive if you want to copy everything on the existing one. It used to be a 3TB, but people kept adding more boots to the drive. Got it, I'm on the list now. This is like waiting for Santa Claus! Do you happen to know what isolated tracks are on it? I'm guessing the drive is primarily live bootlegs
