GeddyRulz
"Blackest Eyes" (PT) is better than everything DT has done combined. Not a fan of DT.
Tick
Your opinions are all fine. Heres a fact. If these two bands perform together, Dream Theater is the headliner, Porcupine Tree is the opening act. Fact ! Ahhh buuut but but, zip it ! Fact ! Then I guess it's a "fact" that the Rolling Stones and Kiss are better than Rush? Since Rush opened for those bands? Not in my world. I'd rather see one expensive Rush concert than ten free Stones shows. Which band is the opening act and which is the headliner is only an indication of which band is more popular with the masses, not which is better. Hendrix opened for the Monkees; were the Monkees the better band? Nobody ever said the general public had unimpeachable good taste. Territorial_Game
Most of the time, I'd rather listen to DT. Still, there's always that time when In Absentia just can't be beat.

PhilCastro
Dream Theater is a great band. I could just never really get into them has much as I have with Porcupine Tree. Presto-digitation
Porcupine Tree is more full-bodied to me. I really love the DT album Images & Words, but not much beyond that has done it for me. But PT has things such as subtlety and nuance and I'd not use those words to describe DT as much. I'm not listening to much of anything outside Porcupine Tree because their relatively few albums hold so much texture and richness, that walking away from it, even for a while, seems like I'm missing out...and that's accentuated by having been ignorant of this band for so many years. I agree with the poster above who said PT is the best kept secret out there. That almost no one who isn't already a fan (or knows someone who is) knows anything about this band is a travesty. I keep thinking that if S. Wilson died tomorrow, there would be almost no media coverage because everyone would say, "Who? Wha..?" And that's very sad. I have friends with diverse backgrounds and musical tastes (punk, alternative, classic, prog, metal) and they all "get it" and wonder why they've ever heard of them. That includes Blackfield...who are better with some people than the Tree. Wilson's a genius to me.
raygun47
And...Dream Theater live is definitely something to be seen. As we all know, "live" is where bands prove themselves--and DT are really great. Also, I really loved John Petrucci at G3 with Mike on the kit. These bands we've been comparing with DT/PT and Muse...these are all great bands we should all be listening to. AND SEEING LIVE.

Tortoise and Hare
DREAM THEATER!!! PT is enjoyable and interesting - - "lighter" stuff for maybe a quiet time. They're "cute" - - in a sort of British Invasion sort of way. But if I'm feeding the machine, it's DREAM THEATER that gets loaded along with RUSH and MAIDEN!!! Dream Theater makes my eyes roll and my legs weak - - they are ridiculously exciting and sexually charged. On my music barometer - - and I'm exceptionally fussy - - they're right up there at the top! The progressions, the harmonies, the changes, the solos, the psychologically edgy lyrics - - DT is wicked awesome!!! I could kick myself in the ass for not falling into them much sooner!!! THANK YOU TICK!!!! If the co-workers and family are over with the kids for a dinner and some chit-chat - - PT will be nice. Tick, Metaldad, T & me at one of our parties - - DREAM THEATER!!!!! Hells Yeah!!! Hare Edited August 7, 2008 by Tortoise and Hare
