Neil is a very aware guy - and I don't believe much passes him by, esp when it comes to issues in his own country ..

 

The Quebec Sovereignty Movement and Parti Québécois was a hot topic back in the 70s .. The greatest maple producing area of the world is Quebec, and I cannot help but think that these social/political issues played a part in Neil's inspiration for The Trees ..

Well if you consider that trees can't live without light then as far as The Trees is concerned it's only the use of force that is the issue. Now given that you can sit in your front porch with your constitution given arms to protect yourself against an aggressive over-reaching government and you aren't doing you must actually be happy with this situation.

Well luckily I personally did not, but when I got downsized at the height of the recession in '09 I needed a major break to get a decent long term job, and it took years. The nonsense and favoritism that went on with the downsizing process,could fill a thread, I wont bore y'all with that.

 

Seeing employers passing time and time again on folks (me and colleagues) old enough to see Permanent Waves tour in person yet offer jobs to thinly qualified twentysomethings was enough to sour my view of "free" markets. Yet Im extremely grateful for the break I finally got.

These days, once you get 5-7 years experience, the youngies can get almost 90% of the salary. Considering that they tend to jump around much quicker causing higher training costs, not much of a savings.

 

And they know how to play the game now unlike 20+ years ago, with tricks such as putting pics of their gf/wives with bikinis on their desks something that just wasn't done back in the day.

 

I always thought as much as it was the slightly cheaper labor, it was also the middle aged bosses wanting to be cool with the young crowd. As far as adjusting budgets, I know that although came out the other end fortunate with minimal damage. And some youngies that couldnt get employed, those that graduated 08 n 09 many of those got blacklisted by employers. I think thats why Bernie did so well w that demographic.

Maples are actually quite content in the shadows of Oaks. Given enough decades Maples (and Beeches) will come to dominate most deciduous forests because of the ability to bide their time until they get some sun. So the song kind of has it backwards as far as the species go, but it makes for a better song as is.
