I dont like much of the Brit pop genre but there is a band I love from that era. Supergrass. They are bloody brilliant.

Very very underated band, Mr coombes is a great songwriter, i should coco, and in it for the money are class.

.

Coco is soo good. He was only 17 when he wrote rhat. Phenominal. My favorites are Money and Road To Rouen

Saw Steven Malkmus and the Jicks last year and he dug out Stereo for the encore. Good stuff.

Pavement is to the 90's what the Meat Puppets was to the 80's.

That's an interesting take on it. I'm guessing your mean based on MP influencing so many 90s bands and Pavement doing the same to 00s. I never really thought about it in those terms, but you make an excellent point.

On that note...the Meat Puppets still put out albums and tour. They sound great and you should check them out if they come to your area. They'll be here in June. Definitely going to one of the 2 nights.

Guided by Voices!

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!! :)

The '90s were the breakthrough period for GBV- the trio of albums from 1994-'96 (Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Under the Bushes Under the Stars) are absolute classics, all of them. Lo-fi brilliance.

(It doesn't hurt matters that I was friends with all of them back then, too). :D

Peter Hammill (almost everything 90's)

I really love Roaring Forties and like This and What Now? Otherwise kind of an uneven period for him. imo.

True, uneven is a good word to describe his 90's work. I think I like most of it because I've seen so many Hammill shows in the nineties.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher was his strangest release from that period.

Most of his solo since What Now? has been uniformly excellent imo. And of course there's VDGG. Hes truly a one of a kind artist and my life has been so enriched since falling in love with his voice in about 1992. But he did create some truly forgetable music between the mid 80s (Skin) thru about 2000. I also love his Appointed Hour album with Roger Eno. Also of note is his Room Temperature live album. I have never heard anything lkke it.

Signature stuff for me in the 90's were:

The Black Crowes - Southern Harmony Musical Companion and Amorica as well as Three Snakes and a Charm

Radiohead - The Bends and OK Computer (they have never come close to those two albums)

Soundgarden - Superunknown and Down On The Upside

Pearl Jam - 10 (and it's not close) I like VS a lot, I also really like No Code...but Ten was front to back the very best stuff they ever wrote. It was a magical.

Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies/Sap and Dirt

Jeff Buckely - Grace

Stone Temple Pilots - Core through Tiny Music was a glorious evolution.

Live - Throwing Copper and The Distance To Here

U2 - Achtung Baby

Temple Of The Dog - quite possible my favorite album in the entire grunge era

Blind Melon - The debut was great....but Soup is a brilliant record.

Candlebox - quite possibly the most underrated band to ever come out of Seattle. I got to develop a relationship with Peter and Kevin and they are still a great band. Their 3 albums from the 90's have stood the test of time as good as anything else. Especially Happy Pills which has some amazing songs on it (10,000 Horses, It's Alright just to name a few)

Some far lesser known bands:

Super 8 - they made one disc and it was pretty awesome.

Virgos Merlot - again a one and done.....but what a rocking CD they put out at the end of the era

Fuel - their debut (Sunburn) is a rocking CD.

Jellyfish - Their debut CD was quite unique in a grunge and industrial landscape.

Queensryhce - Put out two absolute monster CD's in Empire and Promise Land then had a thud with Hear In The Now Frontier (which has some great moments).
