Tis ok Mick. I pretend Permanent Waves came straight after AFTK. Not even kidding, I never play Hems anymore. It went from being one of my favourites to bottom of the pile. I often praise coz I feel I have too, but over time I just don't like it as much as I thought I did, and I don't hear the masterpiece everybody else does.

And I worked out that everytime I have come away from it loving it, I have been high on medication. Go figure!

That's also absurd.

Circumstances with Vital Signs a close second in my view...

100% agree. Kind of in shock that these are grouped with the "worst". :eh:

Well, go back to the albums they come from and pick a "worst"...

The words Hemispheres, pile and bottom should never be uttered in the same sentence...

Right? You can have it not be your favorite or even not your top five but bottom of the pile? That's just poking the piranha if you ask me.

Never will I be able to understand any type of disdain for Hemispheres. You don't have to love it... but dammit respect it.

Nah. I used to love this album. Top five and everything.

But then I discovered better prog. And Rush were never very good at it. Hems is their worst attempt at it.

And Circumstances and The Trees, they really are not any better or worse than the songs on side 2 of 2112, and so many here underrate that second side of 2112. I don't get it. The only truly great moment on Hems is LVS.

Hems is fine to those who love the prog side of Rush. But after devouring Yes, Tull, Crimson, Gentle Giant etc. I really think Rush sucked at it. Brilliantly average, I say.

AFTK is my favourite prog era Rush album because the band somehow wrote perfection. 2112 is a fantastic suitte, not quite one long song, the same as Fountain Of Lamneth.

Hems is a mess, and sometimes I think it sounds ugly.

Tales From Topographic Oceans truly ruined a lot of seventies prog for me anyway. After hearing that album, nothing else comes close. It truly ruined my enjoyment of loads of bands, whose epics now sound so pointless to my ears.

I respect it enough to like it more than I feel it deserves.

The most generous 7/10 I have ever awarded an album. The two albums surrounding it are 1000% better.

Well you Know how i feel about Turds from polluted oceans, lol

Mick

I think it packs more melody in five minutes of one song than Hems does in the entire first side.

I can't be accused of nostalgia when it comes to Hemispheres. I never heard the album until about two years ago. It is perfection from start to finish. It's the best work Rush has ever done.

and ever will write.

A mess? Ugly?

You're just screwing with me at this point, right?

The weirdest part, and believe me there is a lot of weird to muddle through, is that you're judging based on how 'prog' it is?

Call it mainstream pop if you want... what does the label matter? Brilliant playing, great theme, amazing melody and precision. The best screeching vocals Ged has ever delivered...

Ugh. You may be dead to me.

It would have ruined it for me too. Fortunately I had already heard the great stuff before hearing this one...

What cheers you up when you get like this? Anything? Or do you have to just wait until it runs its course?
