tas7 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 We all know that Caress of Steel was a difficult follow up to Fly by Night but does anyone else think the same could be said of A Farewell to Kings following 2112? I heard 2112 then Hemispheres then A Farewell to Kings. I remember thinking it was an odd album, there's no long, one side epic. Of course Xanadu was and is colossal, the neighbours at the time complaining at the volume but the album could be said to be disjointed although the musicianship had moved up a level, maybe a comparison is Presence following Physical Graffiti- Led Zep.
Narps Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 AFTK's is numero uno but I do love both sides of 2112 also.... 1
len(songs) Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 (edited) There isn't a side long epic on AFTK, but it never seemed disjointed to me. Each song seems to interact positively with its surrounding songs, at the very least. Edited December 7, 2014 by len(songs) 1

Segue Myles Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 My ratings for each of these albums CoS 9.52112 9AFTK 10 Not sure what else to say...lolsies!CoS 82112 7.75AFTK 9.5 We are on the same page! I think 2112 has two brilliant sides. But side B is not as great as side A. As for CoS, absolute fanatic for it! The spoken word parts kinda annoy me but I love everything about the album otherwise. Even ITIGB, which is really fun! AFTK is a 10/10, alongside HYF, MP and GUP.
EagleMoon Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 AFTK's is a more mature album compared to 2112, so to me the progression from one album to the next is logical and believeable. 3
Disk98 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Well, I'd say Caress of Steel (rated 4.3) was a pathetic follow-up to Fly By Night (7.6). A Farewell to Kings (8.3), however, solidly followed 2112 (9.1).
Segue Myles Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Fly By Night sucks. So does the debut. CoS as far as I am concerned is when Rush really arrived!

Snyder80 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Fly By Night sucks. So does the debut. CoS as far as I am concerned is when Rush really arrived! Worst post ever. By-Tor and the Snow Dog??? Hello??? Is anyone in there? CoS is a pretty weak effort, truthfully, it is a little too ambitious for what their skill set was at that time and it does nothing but diminish what they did on FBN. For three kids in their early twenties, FBN was pretty f***ing incredible.
bluefox4000 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 AFTK.......ask Lorraine how my intervention went, lol Mick 1

bluefox4000 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Thee Debut does suck.......poor man's Zeppelin. FBN has grown on me exponentially. Great recovery. Mick

tas7 Posted December 7, 2014 Author Posted December 7, 2014 What I'm trying to say is, was AFTK the expected follow up to 2112. In Beyond the Lighted Stage there's not much mention of it if I remember. Don't think it sold as well as 2112 either. I'm not criticizing it just wondering.
MMCXII Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 The difference between the circumstances behind 2112 and AFTK is kinda funny. 2112 was thought to be their last album. A big angry "fukk you" to everyone! AFTK was the first album after they bought their freedom. All three speak of nothing but good times recording this one, with birds chirping in the background..
Lorraine Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 AFTK.......ask Lorraine how my intervention went, lol MickYeah. It was a grand failure. However, me and my staff are available should you wish to use us for further interventions. We have ways to persuade folks. 2
