Make a Best Of Album

I could make four different best-of mixes out of the Church’s career.

A double album out of their first album through Gold Afternoon Fix.

A single album out of Priest = Aura through Hologram of Baal.

A double album out of After everything Now This, Parallel Universe, and Back with Two Beasts.

And a single album out of Forget Yourself, Uninvited Like the Clouds, and Untitled 23.

This would be the second mix (Priest=Aura through Hologram of Baal):

Side 1 (I like the LP format)

Anaesthesia

Louisiana

Ripple

Paradox

Feel

Lost My Touch

Side 2

Comedown

Tranquility

Buffalo

Kings

Chaos

The Myths You Made

Edit: Had to include a video. Love this song. Obviously a Buffalo winter made a strong impression on Steve (Kilbey). Great line (2:40): "Out there the Snow Queen is kidnapping boys. Her block of ice heart tunes out the noise. And soft in the bedroom her eyes indigo. Sleeping in the winter in Buffalo."

Blood hell you guys, just make a f***ing best of album already! Dropping a few tracks or not picking some tracks is not like cheating on your wife!

Make a decision.

It's like someone says "pick your top 5 Rush tracks" and half the people here start getting into a sweat and name 10 or 20 and make stuff joint favourites. Get a life!

Ok, so Radiohead's best of album is over ten years old and it's pretty out of date by this point.

Creep [Pablo Honey]

The Bends [The Bends]

Just [The Bends]

Street Spirit (Fade Out) [The Bends]

Talk Show Host [Non-Album B-Side]

Airbag [Ok Computer]

Paranoid Android [Ok Computer]

Karma Police [Ok Computer]

Lucky [Ok Computer]

Everything in it's Right Place [Kid A]

The National Anthem [Kid A]

Optimistic [Kid A]

Idioteque [Kid A]

Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box [Amnesiac]

Pyramid Song [Amnesiac]

The Amazing Sounds of Orgy [Non-Album B-Side]

2+2=5 [Hail to the Thief]

Go to Sleep [Hail to the Thief]

There There [Hail to the Thief]

A Punchup at a Wedding [Hail to the Thief]

15 Step [Hail to the Thief]

Bodysnatchers [Hail to the Thief]

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi [Hail to the Thief]

Reckoner [Hail to the Thief]

Bloom [The King of Limbs]

Little By Little [The King of Limbs]

Lotus Flower [The King of Limbs]

The Daily Mail [Non-album Single]

Identikit [unreleased Live track]

True Love Waits [i Might be Wrong: Live Recordings]

Although a best of album for a band like this is kind of pointless. Each song is merely a part of the greater whole of the albums.

Good point; how would you make a "best-of" Zeppelin album? My best-of Zeppelin album would be to line up all their albums end-to-end.

It's easy to make a "best-of " of a mediocre band. I could do a Foghat best-of pretty easily I bet. "Slowride," "Fool for the City," ... um... if I knew their songs better that is.

Here is mine for Animal Collective...

Wow, you've given this a lot of thought! Impressive.

Thanks. Are you familiar with their work, or just impressed at the length of list?

The latter, though I have liked the videos you've posted. If I was younger and had more time I'd definitely give them a thorough listen.

Well, if you are interested in any more, Try Summertime Clothes, Fireworks, and The Purple Bottle.

It's like if you bought a "Best of Quentin Tarantino" DVD that has selected scenes from his movies. What would be the point?

I stopped buying Greatest Hits albums a while ago when I realized that real albums are artistic statements in their own right. If I want a compilation-style package, I'll pick up a live album.

(note: for those who are interested, I started this thread with the intent to eventually make this.. problem was I hadn't heard Billy Talent's two latest albums, so I took a week to digest these - to me - brand new albums and decide which tracks were best)

Okay, one last one. A Rush mix I made for a friend's birthday a couple of years ago. It was intended as a sampler, and to make the listener curious to hear the full albums. Did it work? It worked! She and I went, with her husband, too, to see the Clockwork Angels tour together!:

Rush - Hold The Red Star Proudly: 1974-1981

Disc One:

Cygnus X-1: Prologue

The Spirit of Radio

Anthem

Limelight

"2112" (1)

Hemispheres: The Sphere (2)

Closer To The Heart

Finding My Way

Hemispheres: Prelude

The Necromancer: Under The Shadow

Subdivisions

Disc Two:

Natural Science

Beneath, Between & Behind

A Passage To Bangkok

New World Man

Bastille Day

By-Tor and The Snow Dog (3)

Xanadu

Working Man (4)

Tom Sawyer

In The Mood

La Villa Strangiato

(1) Using sound editing software I cut out parts of discovery, and "Oracle: The Dream," to achieve the All The World's A Stage arrangement.

(2) Mixed it so the last synth note held as the opening chords of "Closer to the Heart" played, a la the Hemispheres tour.

(3) An abbreviated version, ending after the first part of the "Battle" section, and cross-faded into a pitch-corrected "Xanadu," mimicking the arrangement of the two songs they used from 77-80.

(4) Edited out the second solo section to reflect the 2000's-and-later arrangements used by the band.
