Caress Of Steel - the perfect album

What's perfect (or nearly so) about CoS:

Alex's tone

Geddy's voice

Mixing & mastering

What's been flawed on nearly every Rush album since MP:

Alex's tone

Geddy's voice

Mixing & mastering

You can definitely get spoiled by the live tracks, I agree.

I love CoS but I do agree with others that they achieved perfection on Hemispheres.

That being said, what an impressive musical display from a bunch of kids, really. Unreal when I compare what I was doing at their age and what they were doing at their age. Way beyond their years at the time.

I have been struck by the same thing with them. Geddy especially had a maturity way beyond his years. Certainly, he had me beat at that age. I can only guess it came from his upbringing.

I prefer CoS to Hemispheres so much it ain't even funny!

Seriously...but I appreciate why CoS isn't for everybody.

Agreed. In fact I can't think of a bigger jump in improvement from one album to the next than the jump between FbN and CoS. From 2112 to MP there was a steady rate of improvement, but not the stellar jump that there was between FbN and CoS.

I enjoy the album,

But I cannot remember the last time I listened to Bastille Day or Lakeside Park. ATWAS was what got me in to Rush. I love the live versions of the songs. Purchasing COS came after that. I was like, WTF is this? :P I guess I was spoiled from the live tracks.

This ^^^^^^ :)

I guess I must be in the minority. I think their all of their studio recordings are better than any live recording they've done. I love the energy live but with Rush, they play so much of their stuff note for note. They don't do a lot of jamming on stage for the most part. The studio recordings are just perfect.

Its fantastic, no matter the naysayers. Gotten lost in the brilliance of Necromancer and Fountain countless times. A top 5 Rush album for me easily. Edited by greg2112

I generally prefer the studio stuff to the live versions, too. What You're Doing off ATWAS is one of those rare exceptions.

I think I love Caress Of Steel more than A Farewell To Kings now...

I wouldn't call the album nowhere near fantastic (relatively) but Necro I certainly would.
