Let what die?

the album and trying to fix something that's broken. it's bad enough they released it the first time (other than it got the band going again), much less to release it again and remind everyone about what was far and away their worst moment on album. it would be like robert downey jr. going on and on about his former drug problems and when his career was at its worst point. it's not necessary to go into it again - he's moved on, people have moved on, and thankfully with rush the band has moved on they've released two very high quality albums (and one decent EP of covers) since.

of course it's somewhat of a moot point, as if they do reissue it only a very small number of very hardcore fans will get it anyway, much less know a reissue even exists. i hope the marketing on it is very minimal - god forbid people who don't know rush get that as their first exposure to the band - it'll turn them off from the band forever when they could have potentially really loved a band who've relased a good solid 15 or so brilliant albums.

There's no need at all to remaster the raw emotion that went into this!!  :16ton: Edited by rushfanforever!

I thought they were gonna remix the album, not just remaster it. Hopefully Neil is just being loose with his wording and they remix the songs like they did on Retrospective 3.

The article says remixing:

"The band had recently been overseeing a remixed version of our Vapor Trails album, from 2002, as we had never been happy with how it turned out. I found that trying to listen to those songs again was too upsetting, taking me back to a mindset and emotional state that hadn’t been good to live through then, or to relive now. I had to “recuse” myself from those judgments, and the Guys at Work understood, of course."

They might just be at the
Mastering
portion of the project.

It's interesting to read how Neil's thoughts went there:

"There were other sources of pain stirring in me, too. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I tend to forget that much of Ontario is haunted for me. Shadowlands. I can face memories from a story that ended badly when I’m prepared for them—but in Ontario it was always too easy to be struck out of nowhere. Between the Hamilton and Ottawa shows, riding into our lakeside resort in Algonquin Park, I saw a sign for the summer camp that Selena had gone to in her teens, and where we had visited her. It didn’t hit me immediately, but later, sitting alone by Little Joe Lake, it beat me up pretty bad."

I don't want to imagine those feelings...

I like how he ended it.

"It occurs to me that we humans have our growth rings, too, and like even the mightiest tree, the heartwood retains the memory of being a fragile little sapling.

But we don't dwell in those times, or in those Shadowlands.

We live on days like these..."

There were lots of good pictures of the guys on their bikes too. Brutus looks about 70, but biker 70. If you click on them they are huge. My favorite...

Neil's head seems to be slowing oozing apart in the reflection.

Bring on the Vapor Trails remix/remaster. It should make for interesting debate around here.

I'll tell you one thing. You can feel Neil's pain and his rage in his drumming on Ghost Rider... I don't think there is a more emotional drumming performance than this song... And it was even more apparent LIVE... I don't think we'll EVER hear that song played live again.

It was a privilege to see it performed live. I will never forget it.

Alas, we who love songs from Vapor Trails will probably never see them live again.....even if the band tours for the next 20 years..... :(

I like the new iTunes/HD Tracks version and am willing to give the newly released version a shot for sure.

Listen to this, Rushgoober...

At about 2:30 you can see a BIG difference via spectral analysis (or whatever you call that stuff).

unfortunately the painful sound quality of the original album is FAR from the only major problem with this album. it cannot be fixed. even re-recording it from scratch won't help, that is unless the lyrics and music are re-written and some guitar solos are thrown in. of course you might as well just make a whole different album if that's the case, which sounds like a fine idea to me. rush have made two damn fine ones since this one came out.

Thanks doctor, for giving a troll more opportunities to troll. Haven't you heard? The bird is the word.

“Vapor Trails was an album made under difficult and emotional circumstances – sort of like Rush learning how to be Rush again – and as a result, mistakes were made that we have longed to correct. David Bottrill’s remixes have finally brought some justice and clarity to this deserving body of our work,” says Geddy Lee. “Every song has been given a new life, from the fire of ‘One Little Victory,’ ‘Secret Touch,’ and ‘Ceiling Unlimited’ to the melodic musicality of ‘Sweet Miracle’ and ‘How It Is’… these songs have been redeemed. Thank you David!”

:yay: :hail: :rush:
