I'm a huge George fan, but I think he didn't really blossom until the end of the Beatles.. and just in time for Abbey Road and his solo career.

The songwriting mojo between Paul and John, and the way they egged each other on and helped each other- I think that's what made the Beatles truly stand the test of time.

Even in the Yoko period of the band... I almost think that John was more under the influence of heroin than Yoko although she was definitely a factor. They were growing apart, the Fabs...

The other thing i don't often say but i think it's true. Paul was/is one of the greatest pop/rock vocalists to ever grace music. i truly believe that.

Mick

I'm not so keen on his voice, but there's is no doubt as to his talent(s). Was he the genius behind The Beatles? Maybe it was the combination of him and John. Hard to tell since it seems Yoko controlled John and did what she wanted him to do.

i'd take paul solo over John honestly. John's solo career was pretty aimless. i almost felt bad, lol

but together they were magic......difference is paul held onto some magic......john couldn't, IMO

Mick

Lennon definitely held onto the magic. Songs on Plastic Ono Band and Imagine are as good as any Beatles song. He lost his way becoming a political mouthpiece, but rebounded admirably with Mind Games and Wall and Bridges. Yes, the production is weak, but a lot of the songs are very good. I think Mind Games is very underrated. And his songs on Double Fantasy are brilliant. McCartney cared more about perfecting his craft. And he wanted hit songs and the adulation that comes with it. I am grateful for both.

I think John had it. I blame Yoko for holding him back. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I think.

True i think. his song's on Double Fantasy showed he was coming back. but we know what happened so we'll never know.

i'm not one who blames Yoko for everything but she was distracting john no doubt.

Mick

I don't blame her for everything, but I do think she had quite the hold over him. Why, I have no idea.

the beatles would have broke up Yoko or no Yoko. they were annoying each other plain and simple.

john was a druggie then. paul was becoming domineering. George felt in the shadow of the 2 "big bros".

ringo was unhappy because it was falling apart.

I found out just yesterday that the only reason Paul played bass when he was with The Beatles was because no one else would. I had no idea he could play many instruments until I looked into just who it was that was playing piano in 1985.

Thanks for reminding me of Mind Games. I had forgotten all about that song. I love it.

All true... and the death of Brian Epstein had a huge impact too, even though they were not always eye to eye with him.

That was a great video if I do say so myself. Put quite the smile on my face as I remembered all those familiar places fondly.

Only in New York could he walk past people on his way into Tiffany's and no one bat an eye or bother him. :ebert: :ebert: :ebert:

Nothing off the Imagine album? Throw out the misguided idealistic sappiness of the title track and you have a killer group of songs.

They were thinking about breaking up as far back as 1966, well before Epstein's death.

I used to love the Imagine album but some of it hasn't aged well for me. I do love the title cut and a few others on it.

Walls & Bridges is probably my favorite Lennon LP. Plastic Ono is brilliant but I'm rarely in the mood to play it.

Really?

"Crippled Inside"

"Jealous Guy"

"How?"

"Oh My Love"

"Gimme Some Truth"

I think that's a killer group of songs. As good as anything else Lennon wrote. And I find "Oh Yoko" annoying catchy.

He seemed to fade away after his first album. I thought the album was pretty good. Felt sorry for him though having to live in the shadow of his father all the time. He sounded just like him. Julian had a beautiful smile. Probably still does. :)

I picked up a record of his called EVERYTHING CHANGES from a few years ago. I love it. He's still making music.

Musicians here can tell me if the bass in this song is as great as I've been reading:

http://youtu.be/1c5pgo6zU10

His playing here is amazing (or maybe I'm amazed), musical, playful, and right on the money:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q7R5t7X8Kk

There was a version with bass and drums (nothing else) on YouTube, but has disappeared for the time being. Keep an eye out as it was very cool, and Ringo plays some great stuff in this tune (and it's fun to hear the two of them interacting as a rhythm section)
