A few that come to mind: Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Donnie Darko Momento Mulholland Drive I don't think I made it through any of these films yet they show up in people's best lists. Do I need to give any of these another chance? I loved Eternal Sunshine and Memento. Donnie Darko was certainly weird, but didn't do a lot for me. Mulholland Drive was better, but not great - Lost Highway, also by David Lynch, was SO much better and is one of my fave movies of all time. Yup, Lost Highway is indeed better than Mulholland Drive. Dick Laurant is dead. The movie is a dark twisted masterpiece.

In between that there's actually a hell of a story about British track athletes going to the Olympics in the 1920's. Give it a try, man, it's actually a highly intelligent story. Ancient Ways
QUOTE (Powderfinger @ Aug 26 2012, 09:06 PM) Scarface. Every douchebag's favorite film. It is overrated. Terrible acting by Pacino and Bauer who were involved in a battle to have the worst Cuban accent possible. Loggia's gang seemed to amount to less than a dozen guys. Also not a Pfeiffer fan. JohnnyBlaze
QUOTE (Amy Farrah Fowler @ Aug 28 2012, 08:07 AM) Just about anything nominated for an Oscar. Really? There are some insanely great movies within this abbreviated list:  - The Excorcist - A Clockwork Orange - Jaws - The Elephant Man - E.T. - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - The Godfather I & II - American Grafitti - Rocky - The Big Chill - Gandhi - Star Wars - Silence of the Lambs - Kramer vs. Kramer - Breaking Away - On Golden Pond - Raiders of the Lost Ark - Tootsie - The Color Purple - Rain Man - Dead Poets Society - Unforgiven - Saving Private Ryan - Shawshank Redemption - Fargo - Good Will Hunting - American Beauty - Gladiator - Mystic River - Lost in Translation - Little Miss Sunshine - No Country for Old Men - There Will Be Blood - Slumdog Millionaire - Milk Not all of these won but they were all at least nominated (and deserved to be imho). There are TONS of movies nominated for Oscars (or that won Oscars) that are fantastic films. It's not like the Grammy's that can so often be a huge celebration of popularity with an almost complete disregard for quality. Of course, the Academy often gets it wrong, ignoring some of the best movies and nominating ones that aren't very good, but they get it right more often then they get it wrong, and there are dozens of movies that have been nominated or won that are among the best movies of all time. goose
QUOTE (Hatchetaxe&saw @ Aug 27 2012, 08:43 AM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Aug 26 2012, 04:40 PM) What movies have you seen that are seriously overrated? Pulp Fiction Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino to me is the master of style over substance done in a really over the top, showy, and often completely disgusting way that just does nothing for me. Kill Bill would have made that list too, but I only saw a few minutes of one of those - that was way more than enough.) Unforgiven (I couldn't understand how this even got nominated for Best Picture, much less won it - that action to me remains unforgiven. Then again, I can't stand Westerns... at all.) No Country For Old Men (Similarly, couldn't even understood why it was even nominated - crazy psycho killer chases someone for 2 hours, sheriff utters some incomprehensible nonsense, the end - I don't get it. It wasn't horrible, but it was nothing special to me in any way and a chore to sit through.) Edward Scissorhands (I remember seeing it in the theater with my younger sister and her friend when it came out, and they were literally crying by the end of it. I absolutely HATED it, thought the characters were absolutely horrendously stupid beyond reason and it was an extremely emotionally manipulative film trying way too hard to squeeze sympathy and tears out of the audience. I still think it may be the worst film I've ever seen.) I love all of those. No one here at TRF blows my mind more than Goobs. One minute he atrikes me as this great philosophical demi-god, then he makes some comment like he doesn't appreciate Pulp Fiction or No Country. The epitome of enigma.
