Double-necks

I just watched the Exit Stage Left rendition of Xanadu and I'm trying to figure out when Geddy actually plays the six-string guitar portion of his double-neck. I see Alex frequently switching back and forth on his 12/6-string double-neck, but not Geddy. Is Geddy playing guitar in the opening, and I just can't see him on the video, or am I missing something?

Are there any other songs on which Geddy uses the double-neck?

You can hear Geddy playing the six-string during A Passage To Bangkok (unless that part was overdubbed). I don't know that I ever saw him playing it. Youtube search...

Edit: I'm referring to A Passage To Bangkok on Exit... Stage Left

During the outro of Xanadu on ESL, you can hear and see Geddy playing the 6 string. There are a couple of shots where he's going back and forth between the 6 string guitar parts and the keyboards. You can see him using the right hand to play the keys, while holding the left hand on the neck of the 6 string.

Heavy, to be sure. They'd give me a shoulder or back ache, I predict.

I'm about 5ft 3ins - I think I'd collapse in a heap within ten minutes of trying to hold one of those babies up...

Correct. He plays it from the guitar solo on through the end of the tune.

This. Listen during the guitar solo, you can hear Ged strumming the 6 string and playing bass pedals with his feet.

Geddy strums E to F# whilst Alex is soloing.I had a CSL double neck, a Gibson copy. It was a nightmare, very heavy and they had placed the switch, which enabled you to play either the 6 or 12 string or both, in a bad place where I kept knocking it down with my wrist.

It was a relief to get rid of it as it also cost a fortune in strings.

You know, I'm probably a lot bigger than Mr. Lee, but I found the doubleneck Rick to be not that much heavier than the jazz. It might have been around 12 lbs or so. If I had the 7Gs, I would have bought it. I played a EDS 1275, and it was about the same weight as my les paul.

I always thought Geddy played a 4 string bass/12 string guitar.

Does anyone have any pictures that could settle this matter?

Wikipedia says that Geddy used a 4/12 Rickenbacker, for what it's worth.

I thought it was a 6 string, but I could very well be wrong, isn't it though? I am not much of an expert on instruments sad.gif

You are correct, the double-neck Rick that Ged plays is a 4 string bass, 12 string guitar.

Although not Geddy's, this is how the Rickenbacker 12 string headstock is configured (and thus why it appears to be a 6)
