rushgoober
QUOTE (Animate @ May 27 2012, 07:04 AM) 10. Absolute perfection all the way through - a masterpiece. 9. Excellent, not one weak track and nearly perfect. 8. Great album, a must-own. 7. Very good album - well worth owning. 6. Not thier best, but still pretty darn good. 5. I don't listen that often, but it's a good album. 4. It's not bad, some weaker material. 3 - It's alright, I'll listen and enjoy it occasionally, but will often skip some tracks. 2 - There are a couple of good or great tracks, but generally fairly weak. 1 - Barely listenable, for completists only, only one or two even halfway-decent tracks. 0 - Just really bad, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I will try this, however, I fundamentally disagree with the rating system. It disproportionately emphasizes the percentage of weak tracks over strong tracks. A single weak track takes away 2 points even on albums with several exceptionally strong tracks. Having a weak track is not a deal breaker in calling an album excellent or a masterpiece. After all, it is really just not a big deal to skip a song. So, following this system honestly, I have to start almost all albums at an 8 at the highest, which is not accurate reflection of how I feel about them. That's cool. I find personally that it takes a bit of sentimentality out of rating albums - it's tempting to give albums 9's and 10's just because you love the group, but I think those 9's and 10's should really be hard earned. The one good thing having everyone use the same rating system is that it keep things a bit more fair and consistent than if everyone used their own definitions, which would vary quite a bit. That said, I DID say in the first post "I've devised a simple meaning to the numbers, but you can use your own if you like," so feel free to use your own. Animate
Also, to demonstrate the unfairness of it all, using the GooberGrading system honestly, I would be forced to give Feedback a 10 and GUP only an 8. After all, as a huge classic rock music fan I was already a fan of all the songs on Feedback in any case, and the addition of Rush musicianship is amazing. See, I love classic rock too, but I greatly prefer all the original recordings of those songs to the Rush versions. I'd give that a solid 5 - " I don't listen that often, but it's a good album." I was only rating studio albums of original material, however, but some have chosen to add in Feedback.

treeduck
QUOTE (rushgoober @ May 24 2012, 05:24 PM) I actually already did this thread once before, but it was back in 2006. I figure enough time has passed to do it newly, especially as my (and I imagine anyone else who was around back then) numbers have changed a bit since then. Here's a simple way to rate Rush albums on a 0-10 scale. I've devised a simple meaning to the numbers, but you can use your own if you like: 10. _________________________________________________ I'm leaving out live albums and Feedback, choosing only to focus on studio albums of original material: Rush - 8.5 Fly By Night - 7.5 Caress of Steel - 6.5 2112 - 8.5 A Farewell To Kings - 8.5 Hemispheres - 10 Permanent Waves - 9.5 Moving Pictures - 9.5 Signals - 10 Grace Under Pressure - 9 Power Windows - 8 Hold Your Fire - 8.5 Presto - 4 Roll The Bones - 2.5 Counterparts - 7.5 Test For Echo - 2 Vapor Trails - 0.5 Snakes & Arrows - 6.5 *Edited in to say that it's been so long since I did this thread, that I didn't even have S&A listed! I had to edit the thread to add that one in! You want me to rate them ALL??
The Gutless Wonder
I own 9 Rush albums. Just another 9 to go then! lol! I'll do a proper list of the ones that I've got later and how I rate them but Vapor Trails gets a 9.5 from me! Snowman
Allright. My take on this. Hemispheres to Power Windows are clear 10's for me. HYF would also have gotten a 10 if it werent for High Water and Tai Shan.. Their first release I dont listen to much. According to myself it is not "real" Rush. But a curosity that belongs in every Rushfanbois collection. Rush - 1 Fly By Night - 4 Caress of Steel - 5 2112 - 8 A Farewell To Kings - 8 Hemispheres - 10 Permanent Waves - 10 Moving Pictures - 10 Signals - 10 Grace Under Pressure - 10 Power Windows - 10 Hold Your Fire - 9 Presto - 6 Roll The Bones - 6 Counterparts - 9 Test For Echo - 5 Vapor Trails - 5 Snakes & Arrows - 7 Clockwork Angels (based on the 3 songs) -

I will pre rate this a 6 as I feel Rush will have some good songs, but still fail to add much space and melody to the arrangements. See last 3 releases.
