I guess that's where the band got its name from.

Yes! :haz:

One night Geezer Butler had what appeared to be a visitation at his bed, a dark figure in black. At the time Geezer had been flirting with the occult and black magic and reading Dennis Wheatley novels and so forth, but after this experience with the apparition he ceased his dabbling with the occult and Butler and the band wrote a song about his experience and named it after the Boris Karloff film Black Sabbath. They knew they were onto something as the song provoked a strong reaction from the audiences they played it to. At the time the band was called Earth but they discovered that there was another band called Earth so they decided to change their name and after a lot of names were rejected they decided to name themselves after their own song and Black Sabbath was born! :blaze:

Not as good as The Prestige from the same year but the one rare Jessica Biel performance that isn't awful.

Why is it my large signatures (often just a single picture that takes about half the space you use) get complained about but you can have a zillion large pix and not a word?

NOT FAIR! If I increase my sig i shan't reduce the size.

I agree on that, The Prestige had much more story and was much more interesting and dramatic. This one had potential but it never really went deep enough into the mystery of the illusions and it went too much in a romantic direction. Giamatti, Norton and Sewell were very good though.

This is a classic and the music is great. Here's a word on the score:

The film's music was composed by Bernard Herrmann, better known for his collaboration with the director Alfred Hitchcock. Herrmann went on to write the scores for three other Harryhausen films, namely Mysterious Island, The Three Worlds of Gulliver, and Jason and the Argonauts, but Harryhausen regarded the score for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad as being the finest of the four due to the empathy which Herrmann's main title composition displayed for the subject matter. The soundtrack producer Robert Townson, who re-recorded the score in 1998 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, described the music as rich and vibrant, commenting "I would cite The 7th Voyage of Sinbad as one of the scores which most validates film music as an art form and a forum where a great composer can write a great piece of music. As pure composition I would place Sinbad beside anything else written this century and not worry about it being able to stand on its own."

Wild

Saw this with my out of state half sister and brother in law at a local art house theater. Great performance by Reese in her best role and movie in years.

I want to see this...

I hope stupid people went to see it thinking it was superhero action schlock.

So they could bitch throughout the movie and ruin the experience for everyone else?

Anything for an insignificant impact at the box office.

I want bad people to have a bad time and "waste" their money. It pleases me.

Watched the first three films in this set last night. Exciting for their time (and definitely exciting from the perspective of a modern-day New Yorker), they are early structuralist/minimalist films shot in NYC by Belgian director Chantal Akerman towards the early half of her 20s. The third film includes shots of streets I have lived on, looking just recognizable enough for me to notice. Nothing pretentious in their approach, they feel very naturalistic, honest, and genuine; that said, I'm sure people might consider them like watching paint dry. La Chambre is probably the most effective film, and it's only 11 minutes long. It keeps you hyperaware of yourself and the film's enviroment, and it's all in a single shot. I'll watch the two other films in the set soon, which are narrative films.

Take any of Kitano's Yakuza films, tone down the violence, turn up the sweet melancholy of a Joe Hisaishi score (aim it closer to his My Neighbor Totoro soundtrack), and amplify Kitano's usual channelling of Chaplin timing and you might get something pretty close to Summer of Kikujiro. Definitely recommended as a sweet companion to one of his dramas like Hana-bi or Sonatine.

Birdman. Really tremendous filmmaking. I hope stupid people went to see it thinking it was superhero action schlock.

Here's an article relating to Birdland but mostly about Hollywood's trend for sequels and franchises that will hopefully reach a breaking point soon.

Interesting read. A couple of issues I have are that the trend toward sequels/serials is nothing new. It's always been a part of the Hollywood industry, and art/literature in general. Wander through the Louvre or the Prado and you'll see my point. The other issue I have is the suggestion that the non-sequel fair is any better product. Plenty of crap "art" films are thrown onto the market. that's why most of my movie watching is actually re-watching classics, or discovering them.

EDIT: Birdman looks like a must see. Thanks for the tip!
