Worst class of performers ever, and it's not even a competition. Is there a single person who, if they won, would be anything higher than a Taylor Hicks/Kris Allen? i.e. completely forgettable. Crystal is pretty good I guess. I just don't see anyone with Clarkson/Underwood potential here.

In a way I kind of think Adam Lambert ruined the show. There is no way that anybody they could ever get in the future will have the level of talent and charisma that he had, and every week when I watch contestant after contestant butcher Beatles and Stones songs I'm always find myself thinking "what awesome left-field thing would Adam have pulled out this week?" Last week when he mentored them on Elvis songs, everybody stepped it up a level. In fact, the only way the show survives next year without Simon is if they hire him as the replacement.

Can we all just admit that the Ellen experiment was a bad idea? Even now I see Randy having to bail her out when she says something that doesn't make sense. I like her on her own show too, so it's painful for me to watch her suck at something this badly. Why do they even need four judges anyway. If they had just kept it to Randy/Kara/Simon, I would have been cool with that. Ellen is like Paula except without appearing like she's on drugs 24/7, which is the whole reason Paula was entertaining.

After not watching the show for 3 or 4 years, the wife and I are back watching Idol.

I know, I know, I'm embarrassed for myself, but still it's a guilty pleasure.  Hopefully there are some others here who are watching and courageous enough to admit it. tongue.gif unsure.gif

So, down to 7.  I think the right people got kicked out last night - well, I would have preferred Aaron to Andrew, but neither of them were going to win anyway.

Siobhan who I was a big fan of for awhile has been kind of dwindling the last couple of weeks - I'd be fine if she went home soon.

Big Mike is very talented and has great stage presence, but I wouldn't mind if he left at some point too - there are more interesting people there.

I was so NOT a fan of Tim, but the guy can really sing, and he's actually got some talent to go along with that goofy smile.  If he can keep it up, he'll go a lot farther than I thought he would, though hopefully not all the way.

That leaves Lee, Casey & Crystal, who I think are the most consistent and talented.  While any of them would be worthy winners, my favorite by far is Crystal - that girl is crazy talented and it's always a pleasure to see her.  Considering it was supposed to be the girl's year, she's the only one who could make it to the end, and hopefully she will.

My 2nd fave would be Casey - even though he doesn't always pick the most adventurous material, he's a great singer and guitar player.

Lee possibly has the most commercial potential - I don't enjoy him as much as Crystal and Casey, but he's still great.  Crystal Bowersox all the way! yes.gif

You mean Crystal Blows2cox.

I think Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood were awesome singers and they obviously both had huge commercial potential that they capitalized on. That said, Crystal Bowersox is someone whose album I might actually BUY. She's definitely not contemporary, but obviously that's the appeal to me, and she's the clear front runner so I'm not the only one she appeals to - maybe she's contemporary after all! She's folky, bluesy, gospel, classic rock - kind of like a mixture of Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin. We need more of that rootsy stuff IMHO, not more disposable pop. Have you seen the performances by most of the contemporary artists on the results nights? If that's pop music today, it's absolute garbage - actually, that's an insult to garbage.

I never saw that season, although I have to admit that I enjoyed the week Adam Lambert was on, and I was definitely impressed by his performance the results night. The guy definitely has some MAJOR talent. Would I buy one of his albums? Never. Just because I can admire the talent level of people on this show doesn't mean they almost ever produce anything in a style of music that I would want to buy and listen to over and over again. I'm way more excited about Crystal and what she'll release - that could be something truly special, as long as they don't try to over-commercialize her.

I love Ellen. I thought she started weak and sounded very out of her element, but I think she improved dramatically in a very short space of time. She's hilarious, and she brings more of an everyday point of view to the judging, which to me is a refreshing change. She's not a musician/songwriter/producer/executive - she's a professional music fan - love it!

The Gong Show was more entertaining. And this is what American Idol is - just a bit more glossy.

Personally, I would like to take one of those giant "hooks" from the Vaudeville days and yank some of these folks off the stage.

You'd better hope she doesn't win the competition then, because they always make the winner put the song they write for the finale (you know, usually some cheesy "motivational" bullshit like "This is My Moment" or "No Boundaries") on their album. Last year when they made both of the finalists sing it, Adam was visibly gagging while he was singing it. I think in the long run it worked out better for his career that he didn't win.

Well for those who actually watch it or care, was Crystal Bowersox amazing tonight, or what? She really deserves to go all the way with this thing. She's someone whose album I would consider buying, and that says a lot coming from me.

She's the only one really worth a damn, imo. The others may find work on cruise ships or at a casino, but do you really think they deserve to be selling albums or concert tickets? No way.

But this girl is something special. Something very special. Everytime she sings, everything else just stops. Her voice has the kind of tone and emotion in it that shoots straight into your center and doesn't let go. And she's so pure and honest in her performance that you don't feel like you're being dragged along. It's so effortless from her. I could listen to her sing all night.

And commenting on Puppet - you're 100% right. It's almost a curse if she wins to have to sing those god-awful songs they write for them and force them to perform. Ugh.

How's Siobhan Magnus doing? She has family in Galway(where I live) and Cork(where I'm from).

She's still in it with 6 people left, but her chances of winning it are zero IMHO.

I thought she was amazing for a couple of weeks, but I haven't been anywhere near as impressed with her the last 3-4 weeks, and the feedback from the judges she's received lately has been less than stellar.

In the voting for the top 7, however, she wasn't even in the bottom 3 of voting, so obviously she still has a lot of fans - I was surprised she was in the top 4 of voting. Still, she won't win it.

Man, who would have thought Crystal would get the worst reviews of the night, and that's just because she was merely great as opposed to brilliant!

Pretty much everyone sang great tonight - it's too bad the songs themselves sucked donkey balls. What genius thought the songbook of Shania Twain was a good idea?

Anyway, the wife and I voted a shitload for Crystal to make sure she stays. I'm sure she will. Thank God we got through country week. 062802puke_prv.gif

After a 3 year break from watching the show, I decided to give it another go this year. Now that my favorite is gone, not to mention the only one who had any originality, I think I will go back to watching something else on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The others that are left will not hold my interest as I find them to be very dull, boring, and simply puppets that the executives can mold and shape into whatever pop format they want.

I'm glad Siobhan left. I liked her a lot, but I think others there are more talented. Yes, she was quite original and daring, but she hasn't impressed me as much in the last few weeks as she once did - sometimes I find her voice, when she isn't going for the impossible notes, to be a bit boring. And I can't imagine what kind of singer she would be beyond doing covers. For the others there, I can imagine what they'd be like on their own.

I'm just sorry they didn't vote out pipsqueak (our nickname for Aaron), although he did sing quite well this week. Hopefully next week.

And what's up with Casey being in the bottom 3 two weeks in a row? In my mind the order they should be voted out from here on out is Aaron, then Michael, then Casey, then Lee and Crystal would win. Please don't let pipsqueak stay longer than Casey, Lee or God forbid Crystal. He had a great night this week, but some weeks he's been way off-key throughout entire songs... and he's just a little pipsqueak...

I think the judges really screwed Siobhan over. What they praised far less talented people for, i.e. "making the song their own", they always gave her a hard time. I remember the same thing happening to Jennifer Hudson. Hopefully Siobhan will be able to have the last laugh like Jennifer. I think she has the ability to make a career for herself. She certainly has the talent and I love how calm she was during her final song. I also loved how she went right to her family and didn't just run right back on stage. The woman has her head on straight and she can't be molded like some of the other hacks on that stage. I believe that's why she was sent home. The producers and executives realized that they can't control her so decided it was time for her to "get the least amount of votes". Oh, did I ever mention that I think the show is completely rigged??

Casey seems to be a decent guitarist, but not much of a singer. I do like his overall attitude though.

I don't get all of the love for Crystal. Yes she can sing, but I don't see anything from her that I haven't already seen from Melissa Etheridge 20 years ago.

I really don't think it's rigged. I think Siobhan has merely been somewhat underwhelming the last few weeks. There were 2 or 3 weeks where she blew me away, and I think the momentum from that period kept her going for awhile as her material declined a bit in quality. I don't think the judges were unfair with her. Those crazy notes she could hit were often amazing (occasionally too screamy), but often her softer stuff was just a little too soft and precious sounding or something. I honestly got tired of her voice after awhile, even though she seemed like a supercool unique person.

I really don't see Siobhan having a big career, though I'd be happy if she did - maybe in acting, but I doubt in singing.

Gotta disagree with you on Casey - I think this week in particular shows that he has a really amazing voice to go along with his guitar playing. That and his looks (which unfortunately make a difference in the music biz) should allow him to be successful.

And Crystal totally rules. This wasn't her best week, but even singing a really bad country song she was still great, if not as moving and powerful as she usually is. We were so relieved she wasn't in the bottom three.

Ok, so what's up with some of these musical theme shows. Harry Connick Jr. was fun to watch, but really, the songs of Frank Sinatra? With all the time the judges spend telling the contestants to be contemporary, it just doesn't make sense sometimes. It's like, our contestants will be out there in today's music world as a current hot American Idol, so tonight they'll be covering the works of Perry Como! wacko.gif

That said, another week from Crystal that wasn't mindblowing, but it's awfully hard to sing a Frank Sinatra song with a ridiculously loud, full and distracting big band in front of you. Lee definitely did the best, but like last week with Shania Twain, I didn't like ANY of the songs. The performers basically had to overcome the songs as opposed to just sing them.

Anyway, I'm kind of bummed that Casey got so trashed by the judges. That combined with him being in the bottom 3 the last couple of weeks means he's probably going home. I just can't believe pipsqueak will stay and Casey will leave. Yeah, Aaron has a decent enough voice, but he gets on my nerves, and besides, he's just a little pipsqueak. Only pre-adolescent and adolescent girls will buy whatever he puts out. Maybe a few country fans.

My only real concern is that Crystal lives to fight another day. Where before I thought her victory was assured, now I'm not so sure. If she comes in 2nd or 3rd she could still have a great career, and yes, she won't be obligated to sing the stupid single they write for her, but I still really want her to win, she deserves it. Hopefully next week they won't make them play such crappy music. eh.gif

Hopefully next week they won't make them play such crappy music. eh.gif

It was a bad night for everyone. You shouldn't sing Frank Sinatra unless you are Frank Sinatra. These kids were way out of their league no matter who they had helping them. Unfortunately they have no say on these stupid theme weeks. It's not their fault they weren't very good, they didn't choose to sing Sinatra.

You both hit the nail on the head. It's like we were all in each other's living rooms while the show was on, having the same conversation. Sinatra is one of the greatest singers that ever lived. Ever. (Hey, I'm Italian I get thrown out if I don't love Sinatra). But he really is the greatest singer that ever lived. Unfortunately, they picked 5 of the worst songs out of his career. That said, I think I'd rather listen to Crystal sing Summer Wind to me than Frank himself (I never cared for the original). She killed last night - and she defended herself perfectly as well. Most Sinatra songs are not served any justice or respect by singing the shit out of them (American Idol style). They are served best by being told like a story. By being sung true to the spirit of the song, and being sung from the heart. I think Crystal got that the most (along with that Luther Vandross singin' dude). He was excellent, too. But Crystal... omg that girl is a story teller. You get sung to from her soul. I am mesmerized by her.

So anyway... what the f**k do American Idol execs expect to gain by making wanna-be pop stars sing the classics of an age-gone-by in music?!? None of these people are going to record a Sinatra song if they are lucky enough to record their own album (without a proverbial gun to their head from the record company). You have to be flawless to carry a song like that, and it left rockers like that long-haired dude wetting his pants. He just doesn't have the voice to sing a song like that. BUT HE DOESN'T NEED ONE TO SELL A MODERN DAY POP ALBUM!! Maybe it's because none of this year's finalists are really that great (except for Crystal) that I found last night pointless. They should have scrapped the idea this season.
