I'm holding back on Yes for now (as compared to back in October and November, when I was getting an album a week!), and trying to buy other stuff. TBH I've got a massive list of probably about 100 albums by very different artists - My Chemical Romance, Zeppelin, Green Day, and TV On The Radio, to name a few - that I need to get to work on.

I think you can hold off on the MCR release too. lol. I don't know, has anyone let you in on the few YES spinoff bands? Not the current ones like CIRCA and SYN (who are very awesome by the way), but the early ones who were started by those who got kicked out of the band. You might have no interest in them now when you first hear 'em, but possibly down the road you might. Believe me, when you run through every last drop of the YES catalog, you'll begin looking in the nooks and crannies for any YES related material.

FLASH was a band begun by Peter Banks, the first YES guitarist. The lineup also had the recently fired, Tony Kaye. When you're a YES fan, the assumption is that the band's core sound derives from Anderson and Squire, but when you hear FLASH, that assumption is challenged. The band sounds very YES-ish on their first two releases. I don't have these titles yet. But, they're on the soon-to-be list. Listen to the songs, 'Small Beginnings' and 'Psychosync Escape'. Those two specifically. Tell me what you think. To my ear, with some minor alteration, both tunes could have appeared on the first two YES albums.

FLASH

The other band of interest is BADGER. This group sounds much less like Yes, and more like the Allman Bros. In fact, a lot. BADGER features Tony Kaye and the album was produced by Jon Anderson. But, I don't know what 'produced' means in this instance because the album was recorded live. Get this: 'One Live Badger' is not a live recording of previously recorded studio tracks. The band chose to record the new material for their debut album in an auditorium, live before an audience. I don't think I know of any other example of a band doing this. It works too. The album has a great sound and feel to it. I don't think there's much overdubbing. Maybe none. And, the songs are very memorable. This recording is the only one Kaye would do with the band. There's only one other. Check it out, tell me what you think.

BADGER

I remember reading about Flash (on Wikipedia, so I may not be exactly right), and how they were accused of stealing the Yes sound. I have Yesyears, and it's currently the only way for me to listen to Banks-era Yes. I love this era, Banks was a great guitarist.

Because I'm bored, and there's not much Yes news to report.....

Of both general versions of "And You And I" - the one with the 'Apocalypse' intro, or the acoustic intro like the album cut - which is your favorite? And which version is your favorite, be it the original, the Yesshows version, or one from a bootleg?

BTW, I'm signing up on Yesfans right now. I'll still be Xanadu93 there!

I've always liked the studio version intro, as AYAI was the very song that started me on the path of Yes...

Same here. My least-favorite version is the one on Yessongs - as blasphemous as it may be laugh.gif , Rick's keyboards sound really cheesy in the intro.

The original, by miles. Greatest song ever.

The version on Yesyears from the Big Generator tour is excellent too. Totally Rabinized!

Definitely (even though I don't have it, and need to get it laugh.gif ).

Are you referring to 9012Live the video, or 9012Live: The Solos? I know that the DVD is still in print (the newer version features the show without the effects, and "Roundabout", which was cut from the original - possibly for good reason laugh.gif ), but the album has been out of print for a long time. Unless you want to shell out 80 bucks for the cd version (or nearly $300 for the Japanese import!), I heard the best idea was to buy it on vinyl - Amazon has a used but like-new version for around $20.

Happy hunting!

edit: regarding 9012live the solos, what I means by "the best idea"is in regards to both price and ability to listen, if you have access to a vinyl-mp3 turntable so you can put it in itunes, as well as listen on a turntable. the cd is pricey, and a 24-year-old cassette - well, i think you get the picture. wink.gif

I have a signed copy of 'Talk' if you're interested.

Any word of 90125 'The Solos' coming back into print?

What's up with the solo works? Gots any yet?

9012live is around 60 to 90 dollars on ebay for the cd, vinyl from around 10. I got it for around 20 a few years back when I was completing the collection.

The cd is only worth 10 though, it's poor, bar a spirited intro on Hold On from Alan, albeit with a cheesy introduction from John.

Xanadu, definitely go with Yesshows, maybe then the BBC recordings, they are very good. Bar Peter Banks bitchy liner notes! House of Blues is pretty good too.

Talk isn't too bad, in a big hair blowsy kind of way.

Open Your Eyes is a disgrace to the name of Yes. The only Yes album I truly hate.

Have you got Keys/Keystudio? You probably have, I like the studio work on these.

Trevor Rabin has this habit of writing songs about "holding on". While I think that 90125 and Big Generator are good albums, there's something about him I never liked.

9012Live solos is something that I probably will download.....and Ill be fine with it..

Can you get me a link to download it when you get it? I'm still planning on buying it, but I don't have a turntable or $70 now. wink.gif

edit: scratch that, I just found a link and I'm downloading it now. This will hold me until I get the CD. PM me if you want/need the link, Owl.

Ditto that. Sure, he's got a lot of talent, but if you can have him or Steve Howe...well... That's quite the no brainer! yes.gif

If your focus is "appearance", or "singing", then I don't think Steven is your choice.

You got Big Genitalia? I just called up an old beau to confirm, but, yeah, she says I got it too. I think I might ring a few others and tell 'em the good news.
