Either Speaking in Tongues or Remain in Light. But Talking Heads are one of those bands that are better live, so Stop Making Sense would also be really good to start with as well.

 

Edit to clarify that I absolutely HATE using live albums as an introductory to a band, so that's really saying something about this live album.

I know that Talking Heads were referenced on R30 by Neil as being an innovative band for new wave music.

 

The members of the band were all students at Rhode Island School of Design. So they certainly had the creative spirit in them.

"speaking in tongues" is good too, I've heard.

 

I know their last couple of albums were more mainstream pop tunes.

Yes. The Cars' first two albums are phenomenal. But so are the first four Talking Heads albums!
