Lady April
Schools and society scare me to death in cases like this. What the hell is a mother to do when choosing a school in a relativly urban community? It is like a gamble. I am kinda scared to even put my daughter in school next Fall. GREAT post! That's exactly what's wrong with America today, too many busybodies who think they know better than everyone else are actually making things a whole lot worse. Does anyone wonder why The Dangerous Book For Boys is a national bestseller? It's backlash against all of this hyper-overreacting controlling crap happening in our schools. If any of you parents have sons, I urge you to go get this book for them, it's awesome.
theanalogkid
Aside from the Corporal punishment part, this is a true statement. And I was a lad in school in the late 80s and it was COMPLETELY different. (but very close to 1973). I was thinking about this after I showed my 3rd grade teacher a small pocket knife i brought in one day. She saw it, took it away from me in class, handed it back to me at the end of the day. End of story.

Borough of Shmeng
Hugely entertaining post! You may be pleased to know that it is not only in the US that such ludicrous politically correct nonsense prevails. It is exactly the same here in the UK. Simple common sense is not allowed to be used anymore. I dread to think where we will all be in 30 years.

Simple common sense is not allowed to be used anymore. I dread to think where we will all be in 30 years. In thirty or more years they will have taken care of everything. The words we hear, the songs we sing The pictures that give pleasure to our eyes It's one for all and all for one We work together, common sons Never need to wonder how or why. I was still driving it in 1988, 1989 and then it got clobbered while parked on a city street (where my BROTHER parked it, that bum). 351 Cleveland... I miss that car... Ancient Ways
We were just discussing this at work the other day. When I went to high school (only about 20 years ago) I was a member of a school team that participated in marksmanship. The school had an armory, a firing range, ammo, the works. We practiced a couple of times a week and had competitions against other schools. I have never checked to see if they still have this but it seems unlikely.
