After finishing off with the Rocky publicity in Europe Sly Stalone is gearing up for the filming (starts Feb 28th) of the third sequel to the very good 80s thriller First Blood. After the silly sequels this franchise is pretty much a joke but here we go with Rambo IV: Pearl of the Cobra.

I have a soft spot for the original film because it's good and I'm a fan of David Morrell who wrote the (1972) novel. I don't know if Morrell's involved or not or whether this will be any good or not. Sly seems to have finished off the Rocky films in a good way and he's promised to finish this series off positively too. He says it's going to have a proper story like the first one and won't just be a ridiculous shoot em up like the sequels.

So will it be any good or not. Can it redeem the whole franchise or is it just a cynical money-making exercise?

I think this and Rocky Balboa are desperate attempts for Stalone to remind people that he was once a great action star and relevant. All he's doing now is making himself a joke, and by extension his previous films. If he had stopped after Copland, or done other original things, it would have been better than seeing him tarnish the great Rocky series (I-IV anyway), and now ruining Rambo......

I think the characters deserve a good finish. He succeeded with Rocky Balboa (quite well, I might add), and now it's time for him to bring the Rambo character back to its greatness as well. I wouldn't count Stallone out. He's gotten much better over the years. I don't think there'd be backing on this flick if it wasn't a winner. no.gif

The rest of the series was crap; this new one should be no different.

I think most people agree the first film was a very good thriller which really showcased the talents of Brian Dennehy in particular. One reason it was good is that the novel it was adapted from is also good. The were no novel sequels and so the film sequels were just cash-in jobs with no real story and consequently were poor films...

Didn't Rambo die at the end of the book?

Yeah he did. Morrell apparantly talked to Stephen King around the time the film came out and King said that he'd been treated about as well as an author does by Hollywood in that the plot was recognisable. Morrell's novel had teasle as a kind of fatherly adversary who was a Korean war veteran so it was kind of a generational vibe he got going. And in the book it Rambo pretty much caused the "war" after first blood was drawn but in the film he was made out to be a victim of police brutality. And yes Rambo did indeed die in the book.

That's what I remember of the interview but here's the excerpt...

"Stephen King once told me that in the movie First Blood I had been treated about as well as Hollywood could treat a novelist inasmuch as the plot was recognizable. The only major plot change is that Rambo dies at the end of the novel and lives at the end of the movie (although a death scene was in fact filmed but not used). The interpretation of that plot is another matter. In my novel, Rambo is furious about what he's been through in Vietnam. He's confused and tormented and in many ways causes the small war that he fights. In the movie, though, he's a victim, a reluctant warrior. The film is softer than the book and has less characterization, particularly with regard to the policeman who in the novel has numerous dimensions. For one thing, he's old enough to be Rambo's father and is a war hero from Korea, elements that add strong contrast in the story."

I've already stated that Rambo 2 and 3 blew. But FIRST BLOOD was amazing. Everyone knows that. And since he took Rocky back to the basics and scored another winner with Rocky Balboa... i'm just betting he takes Rambo back to what made First Blood such an amazing film in the first place. yes.gif

And Manson is better than ANY of that crap I've heard from YOUR collection except 2.gif MUCH.

Maybe if I could just get into watching a show where we laugh at people's lack of ability or their appearance so I can feel better about myself... maybe then I'll have as much taste as you.

I always thought First Blood was a very effective realistic movie, especially compared to the awful sequels. In it Rambo was a human character unlike the superhero he became in the sequels (did that come across sounding pretentious?). Anyway, it's probably Stallone's best movie. Stallone should make more movies like this and Copland. Though I hear Rocky Balboa is suprisingly good.
