Midway Hawker
I'm not sure if a thread has been started like this before, so I apologize in advance if it has.. Neil obviously has a unique ability with words, but I was thinking of all the places where he comes up with a unique "play on words". For example, just about the entire song "Dog Years" is a play on words. "Season of the Itch" .. "Sad son of a bitch" etc.. How many of these can we find and post? I thought of one that I'll start with and hopefully you all can come up with more.. An ounce of perception, A pound of obscure. Is a play on the phrase: An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure. madra sneachta
One of the most obvious ones is the play on Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound Of Silence" in The Spirit Of Radio The words of the profits are written on the studio walls.
1-0-0-1-0-0-1
From "Ceiling Unlimited:" It's not the heat It's the inhumanity A play on "It's not the heat, it's the humidity."
Midway Hawker
Excellent stuff! The first stanza of "Secret Touch": "Out of touch With life in the land of the loving" Then in the second stanza: "Out of sync With love in the land of the living" I've always liked that contrast. Midway Hawker
This one's a bit obvious: Maybe Time is bird in flight Endlessly mocking (play on "mocking bird" of course)
Ghost of a Rider
I've always liked "Let us not go gently to the endless winter night." A play on a line from a Dylan Thomas (I think) poem that goes: "Rage, rage against the dying of the light Do not go gently into that good night" It's about carpe diem, living your life to the fullest and fighting off death even though we all know it is inevitable. Arndrake
One I've always remembered, from The Pass Rebel without a conscience Martyr without a cause I know the first was based on the movie title "Rebel Without a Cause," not sure if there was ever a form of the martyr without... line or if that is his own creation. Kudzu
Basically the entire song "Anagram (For Mongo)" is a play on words. Also, from "Resist": You can surrender without a prayer But never really pray Pray without surrender. You can fight Fight without ever winning But never, ever win Win without a fight... Love that one.
