  1. QUOTE (launchpad67a @ Jul 14 2012, 04:34 AM) A few of you saw my post, 4 pages back, and thanks. The guitars are to f*cking loud, thick and effected on this record. They cover up everything, and this, and only this, is why the drums and vocals don't sound as up front as they should. Period. Nothing can sound good with all that noise going on. Turning up the drum tracks only makes the drums sound worse. Trust me, those DW's sound great, but you can't hear them through all the guitar noise. Alex likes 30 tracks of guitars, and most of them seem to make it onto the final mix. If Alex says, "I want all those tracks", they make it onto the mix. Alex mixed those live albums that sound like complete crap, remember. Granted, those were just single track guitars, but he can't mix and doesn't seem to understand, less is more. This album isn't brick walled, mixed poorly, or anything like that. There's just too much going on, and it's mostly guitars. I love this album, love it! But you cannot turn it up without it sounding harsh. Can't blame that entirely on the engineer or producer. The band has the final say, and I guarantee it didn't get printed unless they ( Alex) was happy with it. f***ing guitar players...more me! Just accept the record for what it is...a great record. Listen and enjoy the songs, just don't turn it up too loud. A great record could be recorded on a cell phone and still be great. How do you manage to listen and enjoy the songs once you've realised you can't hear what the hell is going on with an awesome drum part you're hearing 1/10th of? I just can't do it, once I've realised it inhibits my enjoyment to a great extent.
  2. QUOTE (GeminiRising79 @ Jul 13 2012, 04:24 PM) QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 12 2012, 07:08 PM) wipe the slate clean including nick and his orchestra baton. I think Neil is on some kind of self-induced trip. He almost continuously appears to be searching too hard for "epic" or profound experiences to reflect back onto either verbally or in writing. It almost seems forced. Absolutely this, the number of times Nick is cringe-worthingly described as "bouzje" in written pieces is awkward for one. He's introspecting too much on some fairly normal people/events. As for the mix, it's a great drumming performance - sadly I literally can't hear what Neil is doing on 75% of the fills.

    OH MY GOD!

My first impression on first listen is that musically i'm really excited about where this album has gone. I'm not sure if it's heretical to say but in the last few albums i've found the singing to be a bit of a turn off, i'd prefer these to be instruments if i'm honest. However, that is on first listen, i'm going to give it many more listens.
  4. I really enjoyed them both, Caravan more so for the intricacy of the interplay between all three of them. I wouldn't describe it as grungry at all really, its heavy certainly but there is a crispness i don't associate with the grunge genre.

    Rediscovering Rush

As ever i'm an avid reader of this thread and your insights, its interesting how you've come round to some of these albums and manage to talk about them in context of the time, but also to remove the albums from your views of them at the time of release.
  6. QUOTE (Wandering Hermit @ May 15 2006, 08:04 PM) QUOTE (telegraphcreeklocal @ May 15 2006, 12:12 PM) QUOTE (SalmonRushGuy @ May 15 2006, 12:29 AM) I love all of Test for Echo. Neil's "Work In Progress" DVD which features Neil discussing his drum parts on the entire album (including "Dog Years") make it a little more special to me. Exactly, man. A Work In Progress shows what Peart was working on for a year and a half, to see and hear the drum parts by it self should enlighten anyone how great Test For Echo is. When Peart starts up he is the best rock drummer in the whole world. Does he hit harder than anyone? Hell yes. I'm not a drummer and I never saw that DVD, so maybe I am a complete idiot on the subject, but the drumming on TFE is, to me, totally unremarkable, by NEP standards. As opposed to, say, MP, Signals, GUP and PoW, which all amaze me in terms of the drumming every time I listen to them. What am I missing? Seriously, name a drumming high point of T4E, which song, where in the song, and I will try to listen again with fresh ears. test for echo for starters, the drumming on that is very remarkable, its alos about his more flowing style on the record and the subtelty of it.
  7. really interesting post schmoo, definatly put a different light on things, i didn't get the reference to the movie for example, and that really helps understanding, very clever lyrics from neil when you present it like you do. Bravo sir.
  8. QUOTE (TheMeek @ May 14 2006, 02:06 PM) QUOTE (Test4VitalSigns @ May 14 2006, 05:37 AM) QUOTE (R.G @ May 14 2006, 06:01 AM) It would be interesting if MITA could take this and remove the singing, like he did with peacable kingdom. I'm not saying the lyrics are bad, its just that a lot of people say they think it would be good as an instrumental. A little bit off topic but Peaceable Kingdom minus the vocals is AWESOME! Yes the lyrics were powerful and spoke volumes about the state of today's gloomy world but as an instrumental it was equally effective and compelling.... And just WHERE can I get a copy of said instrumental Peacable Kingdom? here: Rush Oddities great stuff there

I really enjoyed reading that analysis and your reaction to Permanent Waves, i think it caputures the essence of it very well. I'm excited to hear what you have to say about Moving Pictures.
  16. I believe the comma after "brand new" is not required to be grammatically correct,it depends on whether you subscribe to the use of the "Oxford comma" or not: a comma before an "and".
  17. good show, that's a very good assessment and spotting of all the components in his kit
  18. la villa strangiato. its full on godly leave that thing alone and limbo after that i think
  19. well after the first and me slagging it off people said i had to read more because i must be wrong and not understand it and such things, so i read more so i could tell them i did in fact know what i was saying with full knowledge of what the books contained. i have now given up as it was just such a time consuming thing to do if you don't enjoy it.
  20. oh i do completely understand why you love it, don't get me wrong. I can also see the amount of work that has gone in to the books, that's clear i think. I just feel what she does is over-rated, as with any book an author must research and do all the other things you mention, and also there are many books with a far greater level of depth than the Harry Potter series. I am not questioning the story, as it is evidently comelling otherwise not so many pople would read it. My criticisms lie with the complexity of her language and how she writes, not what she writes about. And to address an earlier point made, published material does not mean that is is well written, only that it is believed to be able to make money. Therefore, the argument that 'you couldn't do an better' based on the fact i have not been publised, is made redundant.
  21. QUOTE (Slaine mac Roth @ Nov 16 2005, 05:05 PM) QUOTE (R.G @ Nov 16 2005, 09:36 PM) but i just don't think it really appeals to those who take literature seriously, I think I'm going to have to disagree with you there RG. My degree was in Literature and I do take my reading quite seriously, being very partial to Shakespeare, Jonson, and Hardy among others. Part of the problem seems to be that the books are, for all the fact that appeal to all ages, primarily aimed at the age the main characters are (ie, PS for 11, CoS for 12, PoA for 13, etc). As for it being QUOTE (R.G Posted: Nov 16 2005 @ 03:09 PM ) awfully written by an inept author I really don't see how how you can say that. In my time, I have read some truly awful books and the Harry Potter ones certainly are not among them. You are free to like or dislike the books (in my opinion, its your loss ) but before I accept such statements from anyone, I think I'd like to see if they could do any better and, as far as I know, we've only got one published author on the forum. sorry, i didn't mean it to come across like that. QUOTE RG, how many of the books have you read? 4
  22. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Nov 16 2005, 01:59 PM) QUOTE (R.G @ Nov 16 2005, 07:48 AM) Its got nothing to do with its popularity, i just really don't like it, sorry. Although you're right, its popularity would put me off even if i did enjoy it. I think my main problem is with how its written, the use of English is just boring and unsophisticated. i respect that people do enjoy it While I'm a HUGE harry potter fan, i have noticed this: One time I read this insanely long book called Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson who's a really amazing author. The way he uses language is at a very high level IMHO. Immediately after reading that I read a JK Rowling book and I was shocked at by how simplistic the language was in comparison. It took me a little bit to shake off the style of the previous book to get into it. It's not perhaps at a college level of reading, but then again she is doing something quite remarkable, which is managing to appeal to both kids and adults. If it was too simplistic, adults would lose interest, and if it was too advanced, kids would lose interest. I think she finds a happy medium and she's full of SO many fantastic ideas that it's a breeze to read through. Like Pixey and others, I resisted Harry Potter for years until my wife finally pummeled me into submission and I checked out the first book. I've been a fan ever since. Also, IMHO, I think from book 1-4 at least, each book was better than the one before it... i'm glad you understand goober, and i'm not denying the fact that she has done very well to write a book with a wide appeal (and made a vast profit from it) but i just don't think it really appeals to those who take literature seriously, evidently its a compelling story and i can understand why people enjoy it. i'm certainly not attacking the books or those who read it, i just wanted to see if anyone shared my opinion. QUOTE This story deals with pretty intense human problems. Child neglect, abuse, murder, torture, bullies and so much more. But it is also about love, compassion, loyalty, friendship, understanding, tolerance and again more. The storylines become more and more intertwined and much more mysterious with every book. Birthdays, names, dates are all connected with mythology, astronomy, astrology and history. Rowling manages to give the reader an in depth understanding of these characters. To me its much more of a story about being a human, she just managed to do it within the use of magic. i realise that too (i don't dislike the books for lack of understanding them) but if i wanted a book to address these problems i could certainly find many books and authors who do it better.
