Neil's play on words

I'm not sure if a thread has been started like this before, so I apologize in advance if it has..

Neil obviously has a unique ability with words, but I was thinking of all the places where he comes up with a unique "play on words". For example, just about the entire song "Dog Years" is a play on words.

"Season of the Itch" .. "Sad son of a bitch" etc..

How many of these can we find and post? I thought of one that I'll start with and hopefully you all can come up with more..

An ounce of perception,

A pound of obscure.

Is a play on the phrase:

An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure.

Excellent stuff!

The first stanza of "Secret Touch":

"Out of touch

With life in the land of the loving"

Then in the second stanza:

"Out of sync

With love in the land of the living"

I've always liked that contrast.

I've always liked "Let us not go gently to the endless winter night."

A play on a line from a Dylan Thomas (I think) poem that goes:

"Rage, rage against the dying of the light

Do not go gently into that good night"

It's about carpe diem, living your life to the fullest and fighting off death even though we all know it is inevitable.

The x-ray is her siren song

My ship cannot resist her long

Is it

N (ACC) ADV

her . . . . long

Or is it

N (Poss.) N

her . . . . long

Both interpretations are possible.

Perhaps both are correct.

One I've always remembered, from The Pass

Rebel without a conscience

Martyr without a cause

I know the first was based on the movie title "Rebel Without a Cause," not sure if there was ever a form of the martyr without... line or if that is his own creation.

Famous pederast Oscar Wilde of course who was playing off of "Drink is the curse of the working class. trink38.gif

My entry would be "We burn the midnight oil." cool10.gif

Just listened to Kid Gloves a bit ago, and remembered another contrast:

Then you learn the lesson

That it's cool to be so tough

Then you learn the lesson

That it's tough to be so cool

Indifferent circles we keep spinning round and round...

Another Oscar Wilde one:

"I can resist anything but temptation"(Resist)

is lifted from the play "Lady Windermeres Fan"

I believe this phrase is also in a Pretenders song although I can't think of the name right now.

Basically the entire song "Anagram (For Mongo)" is a play on words.

Also, from "Resist":

You can surrender without a prayer

But never really pray

Pray without surrender.

You can fight

Fight without ever winning

But never, ever win

Win without a fight...

Love that one.

What about the whole "Moving Pictures" thing? It had guys moving the pictures, the pictures were moving, and the people were "moved" by the pictures.

Is it me, or do I not understand this thread? laugh.gif
