TMV Drummer Philo Tsoungui hears Limelight for the first time ever!

Part of an ongoing series at Drumeo where they have famous drummers learn songs they’ve never heard before without hearing the original drum part first. I never thought they’d find a drummer who hadn’t heard Rush, especially not in the world of prog, but here we have it! Her part is actually really cool. Very different style from Peart, but she gets most of the hits right and shows off where it makes sense too.

Yeah, this is fantastic.  She gets the heart of the song very quickly.  I'm sure there will be people who see this and think "her part isn't as good as Peart's", but it's hardly the point.  She listened to this piece of music that Lee and Lifeson created and applied artistry and feel to it (in like, 2 or 3 swings it looks like) and killed it.

IDK how old she is (but doesn't look very old) so she get's a pass for not knowing the song but I'd say she did a pretty respectable job learning it on the fly. Pretty serendipitous that she was playing with NEP sticks.

Yeah,  the new TMV is weird but not in a good way. Imo.

 

Glad I saw them with Thomas pridgen.

 

That was cool and she is a great talent. I really like her take.

I want to like that band but can't handle Cedric's voice. I believe it's "de-loused"...

I would like to give compliments to Philo, but Neil's drum parts rest on a high peak of perfection and it's so sad to watch less trained drummers fall off the side of the steep walls as they try to ascend...

I bet it took more than 5 takes for Neil to compose that perfect drum part, and I bet he got feedback from his fellow composers as he went along.

Yeah,  bought De-loused  when it was released and hung around for Francis. Wanted to love that band (just like I wanted Dream Theater to be great). They had all the ingredients for me except one thing - the songs weren't that good.

They were amazing live. Omar is great player. I do think some songs were good but Cedric is hard to understand,  lots of the lyrics were nonsensical imo and then some were sung in Spanish,  so yeah hard to get into. 

 

De-loused was produced by Rick rubin which made it the easiest to listen to.

 

Having flea play bass on it helped too

I was thinking that If Alex and ged ever got together they should bring in her or someone like her. 

 

I think Neil would approve. 

 

If she plays with TMV , she likely can improvise very well.
