105. “Manhattan Project”, Track 3/8 (5:03), Power Windows (1985)

Power Windows - Entry 1 out of 8

Only Rush could get away with making a peppy historical lesson of a song about devising the atomic bomb from 1945. On an album like Power Windows, we especially didn't need a track like this that has several tempo changes and manages to be a spectacular rocker. This one was quite flat-sounding live back in the day, but the Clockwork Angels Tour brought this one to a much better light. Perhaps a little too cheesy for Power Windows, but still great cheese.

Previously on my list...

111. “Where’s My Thing? (Part IV, “Gangster Of Boats” Trilogy)”, Track 5/10 (3:49) - Entry 7/10, Roll The Bones (1991)
110. “Summertime Blues”, Track 1/8 (3:43) - Entry 7/8, Feedback (2004)
109. “Armor And Sword”, Track 2/13 (6:36) - Entry 8/13, Snakes & Arrows (2007)
108. “The Main Monkey Business”, Track 6/13 (6:01) - Entry 9/13, Snakes & Arrows (2007)
107. “Wish Them Well”, Track 11/12 (5:25) - Entry 4/12, Clockwork Angels (2012)
106. “Turn The Page”, Track 8/10 (4:55) - Entry 4/10, Hold Your Fire (1987)

Way too low.  You write "On an album like Power Windows, we especially didn't need a track like this that has several tempo changes and manages to be a spectacular rocker."

No, that's exactly what the album.needed.  Unless you're being sarcastic, in which case, well done.

No man.  This is top Rush.

It's not lost on me that this song / rating was posted when it's August 6 in Japan.

Agree with everyone else, I'd have ranked this higher. And this is your lowest rated song from Power Windows?  That is....troubling.

I have this ranked a bit higher, somewhere in the 70s I think. It's one of the better tunes from HYF, and the solo section is pretty killer.

Again, totally agree with you !

104. “Tears”, Track 5/6 (3:29), 2112 (1976)

2112 - Entry 2 out of 6

If we are talking about Rush ballads, this is the first good one in their discography. While it's lyrically more laid-back and has more emotion than "Rivendell", the band still has some chops to build up on writing ballads. There are some great arrangements on here, and it has quite some personality to it - unlike "Rivendell". :)

Unpopular opinion... Starting now:

Tears is probably the most boring song they ever wrote.

And yet I like Rivendell.

So what do I know.

Yeah, this is one of the few Rush songs that I've heard only once. It never got a second listen. Same with Rivendell and Madrigal.

103. “Heart Full Of Soul”, Track 2/8 (2:52), Feedback (2004)

Feedback - Entry 8 out of 8

Now THIS is a great cover. The Vapor Trails mixing makes this song very transformative - and holy hell, this might be some of Geddy's best vocals of the whole era. Yes, while there are really 102 greater Rush songs than the highest number I have rated on Feedback, this one is definitely a track to go back to time after time. I just wish I could've had better feelings towards Feedback - and I sure don't see too many Rush fans splitting hairs with people bashing on this extended play. This album is just so weird in their discography, isn't it? It's the only time they ever do covers, and it has a generic selection. I don't think most people will disagree with me when I say this (as I have already seen here) - when I want to listen to Rush, I want to listen to Rush - not Rush being a tribute band for 28 minutes.

This song would definitely be higher on my list than this, if I had chosen to rate Feedback.  I actually like Feedback more than a couple of albums of Rush created material.

I don't include Feedback as a Rush album for the purposes of ratings, because they aren't Rush songs.

But I also like Feedback, and thought they did a great job.

The reason is simple. There were two options- no music from Rush, or a cover album. They would have released a proper Rush album if they had the songs. That's a hell of a lot more work, so for whatever reason that' snot where they were.

If it was a cover album, it was obviously going to be songs they like.

Now, with that said, I do wish they'd made different choices. I would have loved to hear them do something a little more out there. Covers of prog greats, maybe. Or even translating some jazz greats into rock songs. Something that required more effort. But they chose to pay homage to their early inspirations. No quibbles. I got more music from a band I love and the covers were fun.

Agree on HFOS, it's possible the best cover here.

My ratings of Feedback songs:

1.  Heart Full of Soul

2.   Shapes of Things

3.   Mr. Soul

4.   Seven and Seven Is

5.   The Seeker

6.  Crossroads

7.  For What It's Worth

8.   Summertime Blues (the Who's version of this live is my favorite version of any of these songs, I just didn't think Rush did the cover well)

Two thoughts here: I like your ranking of the songs on Feedback (and I'm glad you did Feedback); and if there were any justice in the world, the next album all out would be Test For Echo or Hold Your Fire . . .

I love cover tunes. I can't really explain why -- at some level I like the idea that even the great musicians I revere are also just fans like me, but they have the wherewithal to enjoy their influences and peers at another level: by playing them. Everything from Pearl Jam's Lost Dogs to bootleg collections of The Black Crowes and Bruce Springsteen, I love hearing how Artist A interprets and pays homage to Artist B.

102. “Open Secrets”, Track 3/10 (5:38), Hold Your Fire (1987)

Hold Your Fire - Entry 5 out of 10

This one sounds like a leftover track from Power Windows to me - which is a good thing. At the same time, it also proves to me that this was a great transition album into Presto. This has of the best messages from Hold Your Fire, how we all deal with psychological damage and there's better ways to go about treating it - although the chorus, however, is... a way to spread the message. "Well, I guess we all have these feelings/We can't leave unreconciled/Some of them burned on our ceilings/Some of them learned as a child".

Good lyrics, dull music.  Might have been better recorded as a spoken word "song", maybe recited by William Shatner.

Previously on my list...

It's no secret that this song isn't one of the best.

Open Secrets did nothing for me when the album was released.

Over the years it has risen quite a bit.

It's still a middle song, so no argument from me about where you have it

But I do like it.

I'm probably one of the few that really likes this song. Yeah it's got an uptempo soft rock vibe but Geddy is in top form and this song might contain Alex's most underrated solo.
