Here it is, the 70s vs 80s top-grossing film showdown, inspired by Johnny Blaze.

It's simple, each film is paired with another head to head. For example, it's 1970's Love Story going up against 1980's Empire Strikes Back. Then it's Fiddler on the Roof against Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Some fascinating match-ups there; as they say, styles make fights, but how do I judge between films as different as Jaws and Back to the Future? Suspense vs. Fun?

Pick the one you'd rather watch?

Some of my picks will win by default since I haven’t seen some. I’ve had decades of opportunities to catch ‘em but I just haven’t for various (mostly lazy) reasons.

I can see some of these matchups now: The Godfather riddling E.T. with bullets, Marty escaping Jaws via the Delorian, Eddie and his signature laugh looking up at the blazing skyscraper, Balboa breaking Maverick’s ribs (that’d be nice), Vader slicing off the heads of Selleck, Danson, & Guttenberg, and on and on

The only surprise for me is Back to the Future beating Jaws.

That’s a Sophie’s Choice if I ever saw one. Fitting Spielberg is involved with both. BTTF had the better sequels, though.

70s for drama and 80’s for comedy and horror

That's actually an excellent historical summary, too . . .

Well, Back to the Future is the one I'd rather watch, then! If I stumble across it while channel surfing, I'm much more likely to stop and watch than if it's Jaws, unless it's one of the more famous scenes ("we're going to need a bigger boat").

Actually, I went back and changed my vote. Didn’t feel right for Marty to get that W.

Its not.

Stunning. True story, I was a little spooked to go in swimming pools right after seeing Jaws. That’s how effective that movie was on me,

Looks like the three of us put the big fish one vote behind McFly (currently)

Interestingly, there are only two matchups that aren't blowouts: The Sting vs Return of the Jedi, and Jaws vs Back to the Future.

It's no surprise that Rainman's kicking Danny Zuko's ass but I thought there'd be a couple of other somewhat closer matchups.

The Sting had been out to an early lead.

We're gonna need a bigger vote.

I’m a little surprised by the blowout. I thought Gun would get a few votes at least. I guess Balboa went from breaking Maverick’s ribs to punching the fighter jets themselves! And destroying them as well!
