tangy
It is what is is. I think WE overthink things more than they do, quite honestly. Getting old may indeed be a bitch for the band, but unfortunately it applies to the difficult to please older fan too. In addition to murphy i also am a huge fan of parkison... work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion Tool, really are masterful in all regards.Marketing included and their sucess with their latest proves that scarcity is the key component of value. ... blah blah blah

cygnify
This came up in my youtube suggestions today, and it triggered the dead horse kicker in me to post here... This is what I hear missing from the new album. None of the songs come anywhere near this level of intrigue, complexity, or meaning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOHkeH2VaE0 Bullshit. Alot of that analysis holds about as much validity as the Wizard of Oz / Dark Side of the Moon connection. Over-analytical fan imagination. I could use any song on the new album as an example of beautiful complexity - but the one that comes to mind first is "Invincible." While not overly-complex for the sake of complexity (a critical mistake that so many young prog-ish band make), it has a great flow of 7's, 6's, and 5's and Danny lays down one of his gems (different, but on par with similar approaches on Aenima (Euology) or Lateralus (title track)) the 3 against 7 pattern (video lesson posted earlier in this thread). The song breakdown into 7/4 (if you count the intro in 7/8) which Danny mirrors on the drums before laying down a thick 4/4 backbeat against the 7. Then a pause.....and....wait for it....the climax back to 7/8 with Danny playing a straight out of "Natural Science" 7/8 pattern. This song, like Pneuma (another brilliant track) makes use of liquid time, fore-shadowed parts, brilliant tranistions, and , yes, even some catchy vocal lines to build an economical neo-prog tour de force. I'm sorry you're missing it. I put this album on par with all their previous work and see it as a unique and matured vision for Tool.

Over-analytical fan imagination. No doubt, but the fact these connections can be made (and this video's content isn't new/unique to this video, or this song for that matter, it was just the example in front of me at the time) is the embodiment of why FI failed to meet even the lowest of expectations I had. Which is to say, I literally had NO expectations. Danny's drumming is the only bright spot (as I noted in my in semi in-depth review). But I can't listen to 70 something minutes of music only for the drumming.

RUSHHEAD666
I really have grown to love the album. It is undeniably Tool. They didn't get outside their element for sure. But the music, especially the drums and bass, are over the top good and the production quality is perfect. Got my tickets for November. I can't wait. As an album that you play through from start to finish, I definitely like it better than 10,000 Days. I miss not having at least one snappy shorter song like "Vicarious" but that's a minor quibble. I downloaded the album from HD Tracks. Hi-res flac files. It sounds phenomenal on my home theater system. I'm definitely diggin' it but I need a road trip so I can really take the time to listen in it's entirely. Heading to LA this weekend! Taking the 101 straight down! Will be cranking lots of TOOL in my car! Hitting both shows at Staples Center!!
RUSHHEAD666
Tool opened their tour last night with a reduced setlist at the Aftershock Fest. This 55! That's why I passed on Aftershock. No thanks! I don't do festivals and I certainly won't pay to see a shorted TOOL set, hence I'm heading down to LA!

I may be a sold out whore who saw TOOL on a side stage in 1992, but hey, what can I say??? TOOL blew my mind, and I took a hibernation libation break from the LOOT Nation. MONEY MONEY MONEY! It's not funny in a rich man's world. ABBA Did you TOOLs know that after the show in LA they played "Dancing Queen" and then "Knowing You Knowing Me" as they broke down the stage and drum kit? Is this the right thread for a TOOL story? I really loved TOY STORY IV but that's in a different sub category. So my girlfriend who drove down to see me for two nights in LA had to leave Monday morning. She left my Luxe room at 5: 30 am. What a wild hot woman. But that's another story. So innerstory. I've been book the Luxe since RUSH CON was there in 2015. I was at the Luxe in LA when I ubered to see the last RUSH concert on this planet. The Luxe is Deluxe. LOL Anyway where was I? TOOL? So my woman had to split and in the parking lot while she was waiting for her SUV from valet saw some chick in the corner smoking a cigarette. They started talking.Anyway she was from England and her husband does the lighting for TOOL.They had a very nice conversation. It was there first time in the USA. She and her husband have been jet lagged for many days.Anyway, it's just another random story on the RUSH FORUM.I think the guy who does the lights for the TOOL shows is fuckking off the charts amazing. I haven't seen that many lasers at a rock show since RUSH. Do you TOOLS even understand me??? I travel for GHOST, OPETH and TOOL for a reason. It's all coming to an end. You have to go for it. Or just rot away in your little cubicles of boring life. Shit this is 55's thread. But I'm on topic. TOOL!!!!! I love being stupid and ripping the first track on this album. Yet, you put your heart and soul and money into something special and it works. TOOL was always kind of mudane to me live. The two shows in LA were off the charts beyond. Danny should be the next drummer with Alex and Geddy but RUSH needs a new vocalist. Danny has a huge xylophone keyboard behind his kit. He truly is Neil Peart Jr. Neil is the best for my ears, but Danny is faster and fukk man, if Danny was in a band with Alex and Geddy, you wouldn't even hear the bass or guitar. Carey is a machine. Neil is an angry mechanic. Both are Legends. Both are beyond Beyond. Pick your poison Rush Fruits. I'm going back to finish up "Blazing Saddles." RUSH N TOOL ME!

I can't pick one song Steve. I'm that guy who listens to something once and makes a hasty judgement. You can see that in the beginning of this thread. It's incredible to me. It's like I hated Guns N Roses in the beginning. I bought "Appetite" on cassette and hated it.Thought they were a bunch of posers. But over the summer I fell in love with the record. At least I am consistent and a FOOL. I thought the title track on the new TOOL album was a snooze fest.I am sure you can go back to the beginning and I ripped the new track. But boy am I dumb.I mean Steve, I drove down to LA to see TOOL Both shows. My new woman drove down on Saturday to be with me.What woman on the Earth would drive 6 hours to be with me for two nights?Life is amazing buddy.I bought my TOOL ticket months ago.But she came down to be with me.I said this story before but I am on topic. Sorry 55. She wanted to see TOOL.So we went up to the box office. But I met a scalper.Thought it was a scam.I got a skybox for the Sunday show.100 bucks a pop. Overlooking Danny Carey's kit.It was incredible.I can't make this up. I love every song on the new TOOL album. Every song fits like "Kid Gloves." lol Steve! You know I love ABBA. They played "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing You Knowing Me" during the stage breakdown period. Steve, I am loving this new album. It's their best work thus far. It's all about the melodic metal riffs and grooves. I know critics think that TOOL could like the progressive rock version of AC/DC on HGH but it doesn't matter. I was talking to John Nymann from Y&T.He likes TOOL but told me.... "Why won't TOOL ever lay down some serious power chords and guitar solos????" TOOL isn't for everyone but they are for me. GHOST: I told Tobias right to his face in 2015 in Reno that "Rush has retired and you are now my new RUSH." Tobias bowed to me and shook my hand and told me that was one of the greatest compliments ever! I know I'm a broken record, but Steve, you haven't been on here in a long time! OPETH: Another band I love, and I am so glad they don't do the growl or the cookie monster vocals. They just keep getting better too. STEEL PANTHER: I know they are a gimmick hair metal band with X Rated lyrics and a comedy act live but I love them!!! DREAM THEATER: A band that I have ripped on here for years but have always adored up to the "Metropolis" album. Their new album is EPIC. I am seeing them next week in San Jose!! RUSH ON STEVE! Missed you! I will never change. LOL!
