Principled Man
France's greatest cultural landmark and most sacred religious site is gone. A national as well as global tragedy.
chemistry1973
Just gut-wrenching watching that slide collapse. God - so sad and senseless.
Principled Man
Will they rebuild it? I really hope that they DO. Like many other great buildings that have been destroyed and rebuilt, this one deserves the same reverence. Vive la cathédrale Notre-Dame!!

blueschica
Thank you for the photos. It's so sad to think it survived 2 World Wars and the French Revolution and then this happened.

chemistry1973
The firefighting seems woefully inadequate - judging by the photos anyway.

goose
The firefighting seems woefully inadequate - judging by the photos anyway. Its core is centuries-old wood, the roof is lead and seals out water, the building sits on an island, and it was rush hour. Yet they save huge parts of it.
Principled Man
In just three days, people have donated over 850 million euros to the rebuilding of la cathedrale de Notre-Dame. Most of the money has come from a handful of wealthy French families, but it is still an amazing display of generosity and support. :haz: :haz: :haz:
Principled Man
This is a good video that shows the details of the fire. Firefighters used a robotic device named "Colossus", which went into the cathedral and helped extinguish a lot of the fire when it was too dangerous for firefighters to enter.
