Which PUNK ROCK bands you like?

And how did they sell out? They were always pop-oriented and they just became better at hooks and songwriting as time went along.

Claiming to be punk but writing pop oriented music.

Punk is the antithesis of pop music.

Then why do The Ramones, Clash and others have simple chords and catchy, radio friendly choruses?

Like most novelties, the smell of money , bandwagons are jumped on. The Clash and Ramones were at the start, once initiated, that sound was jumped on commercialised resulting in the Greenday even Offspring etc.

The true catalyst/essence and meaning of punk was and remains - to do it yourself! It is not about the familiar three chord 'green day sound' its about DIY with what ever tools you have. At the start that happened to be guitars.

Never mind the Bollock's just about sums it up - in out, like a sour plum.

Thats why I love the Sleaford mods. they are very aware of this fact, and althouh they are slowly slipping down that route they are aware of commercialisation and are trying to slow it down. Rather than greet it with open arms. Sleaford mods make music that has no modern day punk sensibilities - no 3 guitars chords catchy chorus etc.

Sleaford mods are far more punk than Green day, if the true meaning of punk is understood, yet they don't play guitar and have no catchy chorus.

Whether or not Green Day are punk

I'd rather listen to them than any of the "real punk" bands mentioned here.

Thats fair enough and the reason why I dont get into music genres.Theres good and bad music, you like what you like. However when the label 'Punk' gets used to define a group its interesting to note how and why 'Punk' came to be. Its one of the rare music movements where the socio political climate was so tied up into its trajectory. Now its warped off into something other than was intended, yet the label remains the same. Green day are representative of this, whether they are liked or not, or make good or bad music.

I just use this thread as an excuse to post about how much I love Billy Talent.

I LOVE THEM! Saw them live not long ago, with my beloved Young Guns supporting.

But punk? Nah.

Exactly Billy Talent - great pop band with an edge, great melodies harmonies, thats as far as it goes for me...I will not be a boxing genre machine lol. But forced, Billy talent are really not punk for me - not at all, good band, good music - most certainly. Perception is everything, and thats mine.

Exactly.

But I love a style of music called post-hardcore. The tag helped me find many bands to enjoy but...as Lucas pointed out...the style is so far removed from hardcore its ridiculous.

But i use the label more to explain the style I like rather than because I am convinced thats what they play.
