John Wayne, along with his partially Indian nephew, set out to catch the Indians that killed his family and kidnapped his young niece (Natalie Wood). Will he save her in time or will she be too 'Indian' for him and just kill her?

Very simple premise pulled off to perfection by two incredible performances .. 70 minutes, 2 actresses and one amazing movie ...

 

Directors Yukihiko Tsutsumi and Ryuhei Kitamura were each challenged to take one week and make a feature with two actors dueling in a single setting ... Tsutsumi made 2LDK, and it is a brilliant example of simplicity and smoldering emotion

Breathtakingly beautiful cinematography and one of the very best movie scores ever, courtesy of Ennio Morricone. Full of star power with Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro front and center, and a then-unknown Liam Neeson in a supporting role. Never shown on tv it seems (at least I've never seen it there), which is a shame. Maybe our ADD culture can't appreciate movies like this. Maybe program directors don't like it. I don't know. As Apu would say, it is a puzzlement.

 

Edit: p.s. When Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were cast as the leads in Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice was bitterly disappointed, saying that she had imagined Rutger Hauer and Jeremy Irons in the roles, with Rutger, ca. Bladerunner, as Lestat, and Irons, as he appeared in The Mission, as Louis. Eventually she backed off her criticism, after I think the studio suits explained that they don't appreciate that kind of publicity.

397-- Spun (2002). Before Breaking Bad there was Spun. Directed by Jonas Akerlund (original drummer of Bathory), this movie was (still is?) the Guinness record holder for having the most edits in a feature film with over 5000. Mickey Rourke, Jason Schwartzman, John Leguizamo, Brittany Murphy and Mena Suvari along with cameos by Debbie Harry and a most excellent Rob Halford. Great R-rated fun. 399-- The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946). William Wyler returns from serving overseas during WWII and his first directorial effort after is a movie about 3 returning soldiers played by Fredrich March, Dana Andrews and Harold Russell who lost both his hands in a training accident. Obviously the transition back to civilian life isn't easy for them. Canadian-born, non-actor Russell won the best supporting Oscar as well as a second honourary one. Myrna Loy, Virginia Mayo and Teresa Wright are some of the main women in their lives. The airplane graveyard scene is beautiful and sad at the same time.

Any film that launches a boom and creates a subgenre deserves consideration, but Whispering Corridors and it's paltry $600,000 ( equivalent ) budget is an absolutely great horror film in its own right ... Released in 1998, there is some debate which began the new wave of horror - Ringu or Whispering Corridors - but it really doesn't matter as both are great films, and both deserve to be on this list, and then some ....

 

A landmark film that has been copied for almost 20 years now

The movie is largely praised for the realism with which it depicts life among native/indigenous (whatever the term might be) Americans at that time and place, as opposed to the almost Disney-ish caricatures of Dances with Wolves. Like The Mission, good luck ever seeing it shown on tv, even though it had won the Genie Awards for best film and director, and did great box office in both Canada and Australia (it was a joint production but is considered a Canadian film).

I'm not sure how to describe this one but I'm sure most on here are familiar with this movie which seems to have a bit of a cult following. Basically a young boy who is sick in bed has his grandfather read to him a story which is the basis of the movie. It can be described as a romantic fantasy adventure. It has comedic elements also and is a very fun movie.

Despite being nominated for 11 academy awards and winning 5, this Scorsese film didn't do well at the box office and still seems like kind of an under the radar artistic achievement. Very touching and humanistic tribute to the life of and art of Georges Melies (A Trip to the Moon). Struck a chord with me, I really love this.

Based on the Stephen King novel, Carrie is without a doubt one of the best horror movies from the seventies I can think of. John Travolta is even in it(during his sweat hog years). I won't give it away and truth be told I only saw it once but it's one of those movies you don't forget.

Akira Kurosawa changed cinema forever with this masterpiece .. Like Hitch did with Strangers On A Train, Kurosawa used good and evil and incorporated it into the lighting and cinematography - making a compelling film even more so .. One of the greatest directors of all time, and Rashomon is at the top of my list .... A film that has special meaning as it, along with Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, was one of the many films that I was exposed to as a kid because of my parents' love for great filmmaking
