There have been times - in other threads - I have been somewhat critical of Robert Redford, but his performance was excellent, as was Dustin Hoffman's .. and they had great chemistry in this film ..

466-- Poltergeist (1982). Movie horror usually seems to work better when little kids are involved. Tobe Hooper 'directed' but uncredited Spielberg played a big part in the final product. Tragedy struck the cast: the older daughter was murdered not long after making the movie and the younger daughter died a few years later from illness. Also murdered was actor Lou Perryman in 2009. Haven't seen the remake.

Switching gears for a minute here .. Big Fish is a movie that really took me by surprise when I first saw it - very moving and visually appealing .. Tim Burton's best film IMHO

This must rank as one of the best Sci Fi movies of the 90's. I even owned it on vhs at one point(I need to get it again but on dvd). Based on the Carl Sagan novel this movie basically centers around two characters(Matthew McConaughey (what a difficult last name to spell) and Jodie Foster)who attempt to find signs of extraterrestrial life on other planets. One of my favorite Sci Fi films for sure. I actually knew one guy in college who said this was his favorite all time movie when it was still rather new.

I love the Hammer Film Production movies of the 1950s thru 1970s - esp the later, more tawdry films with the great Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee ..

 

Twins Of Evil is a dark and beautifully shot piece that had Mr Cushing in a particularly poignant, dreary role as a witch hunter, which was shot mere weeks after his wife's death .. I have not seen all the Hammer films, and any one of a dozen could be put here, but Playboy playmates Mary and Madeline Collinson in the lead role put this one over the top ..

I'm not into medieval fantasy normally but always enjoyed this one. The Alan Parsons-produced soundtrack hasn't aged well IMO, but watching a young Michelle Pfeiffer never gets old, and Rutger Hauer was simply the Man in the mid-'80s; like his turn in Bladerunner, perfect for the part.

 

As I've been away so much and missed so many chances I'm going to cheat with consecutive posts.

Another excellent adaptation of the I Am Legend story. Charleton Heston gives a great performance as the man that appears to be the sole survivor of a plague. The hippy cultishness of the afflicted makes for a great vibe throughout the film.

 

Along with George Pal's The Time Machine, maybe my favorite movie as a kid. Funny how deep we can get into these lists while overlooking so many personally-significant films.

469-- The Last Emperor (1987). Bernardo Bertolucci directed this beautiful biographical drama which deservedly won 9 Oscars (out of 9 nominations) including Best Picture. With Joan Chen, John Lone and Peter O'Toole.

Even having won nine Oscars^{TM ,} it's not mentioned often as an all-time classic. I wonder why...?

Not sure. Some of it probably has to do with it being a period-piece drama made outside of Hollywood by a lesser known albeit respected director, with little appeal to modern, mainstream, American(ized) audiences. No disrespect to Dances With Wolves which I do like and came out a couple years after and is also a period-piece drama, but it doesn't come close to matching Last Emperor. Yet it's a popular and well-known movie, even though it's regularly listed (wrongly IMO) among the worst best picture winners ever.
