This movie was a revelation to me; not only what Blomkamp was able to do visually with a relatively limited budget but how he was able to make a film with a hard-hitting social commentary that didn't ruin or overhwelm the storytelling or narrative drama. His follow-up Elysium wasn't so subtle and suffered for it. Never saw Chappie because I've grown tired of movies about unjustly-treated anthropomorphic robots, but it looked a bit preachy in the trailers. I still wish though that he had got his chance to make the sequel-reboot to Aliens (basically disregarding Alien III and IV); Ridley has sort have lost his way IMO, while Neill might have had the right touch... as long as he kept his social justice moralizing and storytelling drama in balance.

Maybe a top 5 movie for me, definitely top ten. A return to intelligent, minimalist sci-fi, or more accurately, "speculative fiction." Anyone interested in medical ethics, particularly in the area of genetic research, should watch this movie. I know Harvard medical school used it as the subject of an ethics study. Anyway, ethical musings aside, fantastic cast, incl lifelong favorite Alan Arkin as the piercingly-astute detective.

I remember sneaking into a multiplex at the Rockaway Mall in 1979 after buying tickets for something else ... As the movie progressed, I was so scared I thought "I shouldn't have done this" ... I'm glad I did ... One of my all time favorites

Somehow Phantasm has never come across my eyes. Have you seen another of director Coscarelli's movies, Bubba Ho-Tep? It's about the real Elvis pretending to be an Elvis impersonator and now living in an old age home who along with Ossie Davis' character (who believes he's JFK) have to fight off an evil Egyptian mummy. I've never seen Bubba Ho-Tep, although I remember reading about it when it was being made and thinking "I've gotta see this when it comes out" ... 15 years later, I still need to see it

 

What I'll never know is whether I would love Phantasm - or many of these films - so much if it had not struck such a resounding chord in me the first time around .. I do think Phantasm stands on its own and should be seen .. It is just so bizarre, and a lot of that comes from the fact that both Coscarelli and the actors have said that there was never a finished script for the movie, and when they were filming it, scenes were invented and improvised as the production moved along ..

 

The sequels are just bad

330-- The Hitch-Hiker (1953). Has anyone picked a movie directed by a woman yet? If not this is a very good movie to start with. Ida Lupino, never a big star compared to other actresses of the time, directed and co-wrote this suspense-thriller about 2 men who pick up a hitchhiker who threatens to kill them at some point in their trip. Edmond O'Brien stars.
