  1. Great song. You might like their Up The Downstair album then, it's relatively similar.
  2. I think Neil Peart is HIGHLY overrated and is not the technical wizard he's made out to be. The man is solid and really good at what he does, but most of his drum parts are very basic. What's surprising is that while most people praise his 70's drumming, his hardest stuff was definitely in the synth era (mainly PoW and HYF). It's annoying when people equate drumset size to skill level.
  3. Dopethrone by Electric Wizard is an amazing album, yet I've barely scratched the surface of this genre.
  4. Shoegaze is probably my all-time favorite genre of music! Yet I've actually not heard a majority of the bands you listed. The main reason why I love The Smashing Pumpkins is because (in their early days at least) they had a strong shoegaze influence that really worked brilliantly in the confines of their alternative sound. Everything from the wall-of-sound type production to the almost ethereal vocal style. Sonic Youth, Laura, and Catherine Wheel all have a shoegaze influence in their music.
  5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOC2g9YtNKo The vocal section at the end especially gets to me.
  6. I've missed the past few weeks. I'm on vacation now so I may just stream the entire season from beginning to end to catch up
  7. QUOTE (Ovningskora @ Dec 25 2011, 11:58 PM) My evaluation today: Gods: Devil Doll, Coheed and Cambria Nice! On liking C&C! What can you recommend by Devil Doll? I have Sacrilege, and enjoy it immensely and I wouldn't mind some other stuff.
  8. Childhood My mom was a huge influence. The Beatles, Michael Jackson, lots of motown, Madonna, and countless other 60's/70's/80's rock and pop bands. Pre-Teen Green Day, Bush, and Stone Temple Pilots were my first foray into my own music. This was about 1994 and all these bands had breakthrough albums during that year that I adored. Teen METAL. Metallica was my band. I knew every single thing there was to know about them. I branched out into death metal, black metal, and every other kind of metal, and eventually progressive metal. Late-Teen Lots of progressive metal and rock. I listened to nothing but prog rock and obscure prog bands from around the world. Eventually I got tired of it and moved onto poppier bands like Coheed & Cambria, U2, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Now Skipping ahead, now I listen to virtually everything, with my main focus on bands that combine many many genres into a unified sound. My top 5 current favorite bands are: The Smashing Pumpkins Coheed & Cambria The Dear Hunter Between The Buried & Me Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson
  9. Portnoy needs to shut the hell up. Seriously, he's not going to get any love for AMob and his other projects if he keeps pissing off fans who are still with him.
  10. I thought this season as a whole was fantastic. I was literally interested throughout the entire thing. The incest thing doesn't bother me. I think that it's going to play in the next season as some sort of reminder of Brian Moser, and how in season 6 Deb caught Dex with Travis in the EXACT same kill situation that Dex found Deb in season 1. Couple that with the hand that was sent by the intern (ice-truck killer's hand)...and we have some serious plot action for next season. Overall, FINALLY! Someone has seen Dex and lived to tell about it, now the end is upon us.
  11. Definitely. The Enemy Within is one of my favorite Rush songs, and the other 3 parts are great as well.
  12. QUOTE (The Owl @ Dec 17 2011, 07:03 AM) Like many here, I think it is safe to say that GFD is my "album of the year", and even above some of the PT albums, could be considered Wilson's Masterpiece, at least one of them... the album is honestly one of those albums that only comes along "every once in a while" That being said, I do have one criticism about the album, and that is (and as a prog fan this might be considered blasphemous) the last 2 tracks of the album (the epic Raider II, and LDIHCFME) I feel run on a bit too long, and that a bit of fat could be cleared away from both tracks, especially towards the end of Raider II.. Raider II in specific kind of reminds me of Pink Floyds epic Echoes, not so much musically, but that in even though I love the song, I feel that there is alot of fat or padding to lengthen the song for the sake of making it longer...If you remember around 2003 or 04, Pink Floyd released a 2 disc compilation album also named Echoes, on which contained a 15 minuted abridged version of Echoes... But that version does not do what many edits do by merely presenting a watered down version of the longer/main version of the track. No in fact that version trimmed alot of the padding present in echoes and presented a slighty shorter but more concise version of the song, by trimming small sections throughout the song... 8 bars here.......4 bars there.....etc. Raider II I feel could have benefited from a similar treatment... Great track, but slightly overlong. LDIHCFME, I feel needs to end a bit sooner... It feels like the last 3 minutes just make way for an overlong fadeaway... once agian great track, but a bit too much fat at the end. I agree with a lot of that. I have three main contenders for album of the year and I honestly cannot pick. GFD is incredible and is SW's crowning achievement IMO. Also, I agree with the endings of RII and LDIHCFME. Overly long intros/outros of silence is probably my least favorite thing that a musician can do. King Crimson does that a lot and it bothers the f**k out of me. But overall, I feel like both songs are very strong otherwise.
  13. QUOTE (micgtr71 @ Dec 7 2011, 07:32 PM) If they played 3 bars of the tune I would be ecstatic. Seriously. I don't expect them to play the whole thing in full, as it is an obscure 20 minute song from 36 years ago, but a single minute of the song would be unreal. Just the part past the acoustic intro could be awesome, as well as the solo in No One At The Bridge
  14. First solo album reminds me of The Cure, while the second reminds me of King Crimson. Each has a very unique vibe.
  15. I forgot my all time favorite: This man was untouchable back in the late 80's/early 90's.
  16. QUOTE (Gompers @ Dec 14 2011, 01:28 PM) QUOTE (Tony R @ Dec 14 2011, 02:08 PM) QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Dec 14 2011, 12:36 AM) QUOTE (Tony R @ Dec 13 2011, 07:29 PM)QUOTE (Soni @ Dec 13 2011, 09:41 PM) I just gave the second disc of the Incident a spin... much better than what I remembered... Hope that will be their next direction. I think the whole album is under-rated though it is far from perfect. Wilson's lyrics and themes over the last two albums appear to be alienating many. I would think that the lyrics wouldn't really affect that many people. I'd guess that most of their fans are musicians who put the music first. I don't really like FOABP's lyrics but that doesn't change my opinion of the album at all. Maybe its just me. I really like the lyrics on FoaBP mainly because I love the book on which they are based. I didn't know this. What book? Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis, the author of American Psycho. It's a pretty interesting read
  17. QUOTE (theredtamasrule @ Dec 12 2011, 10:55 PM) QUOTE (GrandDesigner @ Dec 12 2011, 07:56 PM) I have no idea what he's going to do with that hand, but I have a feeling it's going to "out" Dexter to someone. He's mailing it to Dexter. I know that, but why? I'm sure it's for some sort of revenge, or like you said, the intern knows who he really is
  18. Great episode! I am actually very curious about the intern and the LaGuerta situation, which is surprising as I usually hate LaGuerta's storylines. I have no idea what he's going to do with that hand, but I have a feeling it's going to "out" Dexter to someone.
  19. I saw the first season and loved it, but lost HBO in between. I've missed True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, and Entourage. Maybe when I have some time I'll d/l them all
  20. I wish I still had a few! Back when I was younger I used to make mix tapes of Metallica songs so I could play drums along to them. I'd arrange them as if it was a setlist, basically mimicking the setlist for the 1989 Seattle show on the Live Shit box set. They were my absolute favorite band and a lot of my early drumming practice came from playing their songs. I tried to start it off with easier songs and build to the harder ones (though Blackened was always a bitch to start with) A usual tracklist would be: Blackened Creeping Death Holier Than Thou Ride The Lightning Disposable Heroes The Frayed Ends Of Sanity One Through The Never Fight Fire With Fire Battery Damage Inc. Sad But True Dyer's Eve Whiplash
  21. Saw them open for Coheed & Cambria a few years back. Good band, though I can only tolerate them in small doses before they bore/annoy me. Imaginary Enemy is an AMAZING song however!
  22. Probably my favorite band of all time! If I had the money, I'd probably get the new remasters. I love all that bonus shit (and TSP is the one band whose demos and b-sides are usually at a quality that is just as good, if not better, than the actual released material). Siamese Dream is my favorite, with the Machina albums and Mellon Collie coming next. Gish is a fantastic debut...I could listen to Rhinoceros and Suffer all day.
  23. Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins. For me, there's not a single weak/unnecessary moment. Not to mention there's about 28 outtakes from it that are also brilliant, and in some cases, better than the tracks that made it onto the album.
  24. QUOTE (RUSHHEAD666 @ Dec 7 2011, 06:20 PM) "Stars Die!" It will be played at my funeral. Excellent choice! My favorites would be Heartattack In A Layby (easily the saddest song he's ever done IMO) Buying New Soul Dark Matter Trains Normal Time Flies
