  1. Is this exciting or depressing? That seems like a lot of derivative material. Even if they bat the avg of the first three phases, that's a lot of dreck. Of course, no one's making me go or spend money, so if this looks good, enjoy! I hope they're great. Are they still using comic stories, or are they on their own? We know how well that worked out for GoT . . .
  2. If you'll forgive my ignorance, even that answer sounds obscure!
  3. Sorry if this is a repeat, but I did not do due diligence by reading the other ten pages of the thread, but did anyone watch the "Documentary Now!" series of parodies from Fred Armisen and Bill Hader? Really funny (most of them) and oddly they give a real appreciation for how hard it is to do a documentary well. The music ones are my favorites.
  4. Okay, just get things moving again, I'll say "Pedal to the Metal" Triumph
  5. Storms overnight have hopefully broken the heat and humidity. It was 110 heat index here yesterday -- and while it wasn't the end of the world -- it was miserable.
  6. Normally, I pronounce it "announcer," but I thought for the non-American patrons that "commentator" was more idiomatic -- although I couldn't really explain why. I guess in American broadcast lingo, Vitale is the color commentary guy, rather than the play-by-play guy, but whenever he's on a game I'm watching he's the "reason I use the must button and read the subtitles guy." I remember when I bought the cassette of PeW and was disappointed in how short it was (about 17 mins a side, I think). That's not much shorter than Hemi or FtK, but divided by three songs? What's this? That disappointment disappeared after a listen or two. It's still not my favorite album, but it may be the best combo of form and function.
  7. Drat! Okay, if we're just talking bass tones, it's the Rick for me. Plus, it just has that classic "look" that my mind's eye summons up when I think of Geddy.
  8. My ears! The pain, the pain! But, yes PeW was an awesome combo of economy and skill. Not a weak link.
  9. Huh, well, I'm partial to the '80s stuff, but I also prefer the fuzzed out bass, so . . . .
  10. I went with Meddle because of "Fearless" and "Echoes." Animals, WYWH, Division Bell, also all great. PF post-Waters > Waters solo
  11. I agree with all your sentiments, but the SATM is a little too Dick Vitale* for me . . . I'll go listen again, just for the smiles. (*For those of you who do not listen to American broadcasts of college basketball, Dick Vitale is an "commentator" whose style is the equivalent of water boarding for the ears. Awful.)
  12. Yellowstone, with Kevin Costner. Most of the characters are deeply troubled and annoying, but the plot is fun, and it's probably worth watching with the sound off, just for the clothing and the Montana scenery porn (although I don't know where it's actually filmed). Man, I wish I looked good in a cowboy hat. I didn't realize Netflix had cancelled Santa Clarita Diet -- that does piss me off!
  13. Truly an outstanding example of what can be done when our will matches our ambitions. A great moment then, and still a great moment now. I don't want shake my fist at clouds and tell kids to get off my lawn, but I'm a little afraid we don't make 'em like that anymore. Maybe we can be re-inspired. I, too, have given "Countdown" some re-listens this week!
  14. "And my doctor said I wouldn't get so many nosebleeds if I'd just keep my finger out of there . . . " I'm beginning to appreciate the performance art/Dadaist quality of these posts . . .
  15. Went to see Stuber with the fam. We laughed, we liked it; I've already forgotten most of it.
  16. Robin was awesome and I now that I know the actress is Uma Thurman's daughter, I cannot believe I didn't think before "my god, that woman looks a lot like Uma Thurman!" I liked Season 3 quite a bit. Better than 2, maybe not as good as 1; it's always hard to recreate that feeling from something the first time through. For instance, I would love to be able and go back and listen to Grace Under Pressure for the first time . . .
  17. He was absolutely brilliant in Defending Your Life... Yeah, this was going to be the movie I mentioned. Great work in the scene where he explains that he's reading 1s and 0s, and he's not trying to be rude when he tells the Albert Brooks character, "you wouldn't understand it." Thanks for the memories.
  18. I knew Asia from radio play and reading about them in things like Circus magazine, so I bought Astra when it came out, and I couldn't name a single song off that one now. I think I listened to it maybe four or five times, then put it on a shelf. It's probably still there. The chemistry just wasn't there or something. The whole was less than the sum of the part. I liked the ELP with Cozy Powell better. And since we've roped in Boston, I liked Third Stage, too; I remember thinking the liner notes were funny. "Amanda," I think, and "Cool the Engines." But its appeal wore off quickly and that was my last exposure to them. I get the "whole life to write first album" -- it seems so obvious -- but surely some bands don't peak until they're four or five albums in? Deep Purple? Pink Floyd? Jethro Tull?
  19. I'll get back to you, but the reviews for this season have been very strongly positive.
  20. Led Zeppelin IV. "When the Levee Breaks." Some good tracks on Who's Next, but if I were on a desert island, the variety of the tracks I like on IV wins the day.
  21. Presto for me. RTB was a bit of a letdown, I felt.
  22. I used get a copy of MAD from the grocery store when my mom took us shopping with her. I'll never forget Thulsa Doom from Conan parodied as Thirsty Goon. End of so many eras . . .
  23. Cold Pursuit, with Liam Neeson. 8/10. You probably know what you're getting going in, and that's what you're going to get. But it's well done in its genre.
